The two best teams have made it to the World cup final, which should be more competitive than Germany's 7-1 thrashing of Brazil and more compelling than Argentina's win in penalties over the Netherlands.

Brazil will contest the Netherlands in Saturday’s third place play-off match, with much criticism directed at the credibility and importance of third place play-off matches. Goalscoring's dropped in the World Cup knockout rounds and these two teams have not been immune to that trend. After scoring 10 goals during the group stage, the Netherlands have been able to muster just one in their two knockout round games. Argentina wasn't exactly setting the world on fire with their performances during their group stage, but they did score six goals. It took them 118 minutes to score against Switzerland, and in their next game against Belgium, Lionel Messi and Co. managed just two shots on target. Whoever can get their attack flowing again will almost certainly be the team which emerges victorious in Sao Paulo on Wednesday afternoon.

Coverage of the first semi-final, which takes place at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The host nation have only faced European opposition once en route to the last four, that being a 3-1 victory in the opening fixture against Croatia, and this time they face arguably the strongest team that continent has to offer, and will have to do so without the services of the injured Neymar and suspended Thiago Silva. The Germans reached this stage courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over France in the quarter-finals, with centre-back Mats Hummels scoring the only goal of the game. In reaching this stage, the Germans have set a World Cup record in reaching the semi-finals at four consecutive tournaments, but they will look to improve on each of those performances having finished as runners-up in 2002, and failing to progress to the final in 2006 and 2010. In the event of extra-time and penalties, subsequent programmes are subject to change.
