There's no denying that Fountains of Wayne know how to craft a great pop record. They know how to write a hook, they can pull of mild rockers and sweet ballads with equal aplomb, and they write melodies that feel like half-forgotten favorites. They have all the elements of a classic power pop band but they suffer from that peculiar '90s ailment – detachment. For all their flair, talent, and craftsmanship, the band don't really dig deeper than the surface. Of course, that doesn't mean they make bad records, and their second album, Utopia Parkway, is, if anything, every bit as good as their fine debut. All the songs immediately make a connection and all of their melodic attributes simply strengthen with repeated listens. However, those repeated listens reveal that Fountains of Wayne don't have a lot to say. That's not a cardinal sin in guitar pop, since most bands simply recycle the same lovelorn themes, but Fountains choose to have fun with clichés, throwing in goofy asides even in their ballads.

Four young Seattle brass players, all relocated to New York City to study at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music, decided to form a quartet in late 2011. Through much experimentation they discovered a colorful collective sound that drew from American folk music, indie rock, jazz, and classical music. For the next two years they performed constantly in both cities, creating and developing a large repertoire of original compositions. In early 2013 The Westerlies were approached by their Seattle-based teacher, friend, and mentor, Wayne Horvitz, to create a record of his music.

Wayne Shorter - The Best of Wayne Shorter (1988)  Music

Wayne Shorter - The Best of Wayne Shorter (1988)
Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | Artworks | 63 min | 183 MB
Label: Blue Note Records | Rel: 1988

Although one can't lose with any of Shorter's classic Blue Note titles from the '60s, this sampler is perfect for newcomers just wanting to get their feet wet. Covering the period 1964-1969, the nine tracks include highlights from Night Dreamer ( "Virgo" ), Speak No Evil (the title track and "Infant Eyes" ), and Adam's Apple ( "Footprints" ). There's also the title cut from Juju (replete with a sparkling Elvin Jones solo) and the superb "Lost" off of The Soothsayer. With nice additions from Schizophrenia and the fusion-leaning Super Nova, that just leaves the long-in-the-vaults Etc. (one of the saxophonist's best) and All Seeing Eye to account for. With more than enough Shorter material to dive into, and top hard bop contributions from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, James Spaulding, and Joe Chambers, these oversights shouldn't pose any great dilemmas. Besides, it shouldn't be long before Shorter's entire Blue Note catalog sits snugly on your shelves.
