Any jazz fan will tell you that Harvie Swartz is one of the great bass players on the scene today. He has played and recorded with Mike Stern, John Scofield, Kenny Barron, Gil Evans, Mike Brecker, Chick Corea, John Abercrombie, Juan Carlos Formell, Stan Getz, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Horatio "El Negro" Hernandez and many others. His duet recordings with singer Sheila Jordan are legendary.
Harvie has always sought new sounds and directions for his music. After deep study of Afro-Cuban and Latin genres, including trips to Cuba and sessions with local masters, he formed Eye Contact. The group has already toured to enthusiastic response on the East Coast. With this release of their first CD, they will appear at Festivals and Clubs across the entire country as well as abroad. This new sound will turn the world of jazz and Latin jazz on its ear. ~ CDBaby

I am a lover of mystery novels, and Eye Contact more than fills my requirements for a satisfying read. The book offers a gruesome and unfortunately believable crime, humanly flawed characters, psychologically disturbing yet frighteningly normal suspects, and a realistic yet uplifting conclusion. Although I was initially drawn to Eye Contact because of the mystery element (which certainly kept me turning the pages eager to find out "who done it"), the mystery is not what sticks with me a week after finishing the book.

John Elder Robison - Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's
English | Crown | 2008 | ISBN: 0307396185 | 302 pages | EPUB | 3 MB

Ever since he was young, John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits—an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes (and stick his younger brother, Augusten Burroughs, in them)—had earned him the label “social deviant.” It was not until he was forty that he was diagnosed with a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. That understanding transformed the way he saw himself—and the world. A born storyteller, Robison has written a moving, darkly funny memoir about a life that has taken him from developing exploding guitars for KISS to building a family of his own. It’s a strange, sly, indelible account—sometimes alien yet always deeply human.

Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habitsan inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holeshad earned him the label social deviant. No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on. After fleeing his parents and dropping out of high school, his savant-like ability to visualize electronic circuits landed him a gig with KISS. Later, he drifted into a real job, as an engineer for a major toy company. But the higher Robison rose in the company, the more he had to pretend to be normal and do what he simply couldnt: communicate. It was not until he was forty that an insightful therapist told him he had the form of autism called Aspergers syndrome. That understanding transformed the way Robison saw himselfand the world. Robison also provides a fascinating reverse angle on the younger brother he left at the mercy of their nutty parentsthe boy who would later change his name to Augusten Burroughs. Ultimately, this is the story of Robisons journey from his world into ours, a strange, sly, indelible accountsometimes alien, yet always deeply human.
