One of five adaptations of the Marquis de Sade's Philosophy in the Boudoir directed by cult filmmaker Jesus Franco, this version was perhaps the most subdued, although it was still explicit enough to encounter censorship problems. Maria Rohm stars as Mme. de St. Ange, who reads the Marquis' book and fantasizes about its excessive content. St. Ange has sex with a man named Mistival (Paul Muller) in exchange for permission to take his lovely daughter Eugenie (Marie Liljedahl) to her vacation island. When they arrive, St. Ange and her lover Mirvel (Jack Taylor) seduce Eugenie into joining their bizarre sexual role-playing. A party follows, during which Eugenie is drugged and forced to submit to sadomasochistic games directed by Dolmance (Christopher Lee) and his oddly-dressed followers. When she awakens from her stupor, however, Eugenie finds that the games have turned to murder. Nino Korda and Herbert Fuchs co-star in this provocative exploitation film. Christopher Lee's role as the narrator Dolmance was originally accepted by George Sanders, whose personal crises forced him to withdraw prior to production.

"Eugenie" is further proof that Jess Franco, despite most of his films being absolute crap, had some legitimate talent as a director and was an auteur. Many of Franco's running themes (sado-masochism, the blurring of fantasy and reality, and escape) are in full-blow in this modernization of Marquis De Sade. Its an admittedly sadistic film at moments and just drenches of Franco's typical euro-sleaze decadence, but its also surprisingly classy and has a lot more depth than Franco's typical style-over-substance mindset allows. For me, it ranks with "The Diabolical Dr. Z" and "Vampiros Lesbos" as the man's finest work. His direction is really impressive this time around. Despite a few out-of-focus shots, there are lush moments of beautiful photography. Also, he keeps it moving at a much quicker pace than he is often known for.

Eugenie is a film that shocked 1969 audiences, with interracial kissing, woman-to-woman fondling, and brother-sister sex games. It is beautifully filmed, sublimely acted (within its cult pedigree), and has reams of coolness, which makes it a good bet for modern audiences. If you get bored watching Connery drive his Aston Martin to a romantic rendezvous for some witty repartee, Eugenie will likely bore you. If you prefer graphic to simulated, you might find it lame. But if you can buy into the characters and appreciate the care of the filmmaking, Eugenie is a rewarding, disturbing piece of celluloid. In the interview, Franco states “Of all my films, it is the one I hate the least.” If you know Franco and his staggering body of work, that’s saying something.

These 36 lectures tell the remarkable story of a tumultuous thousand-year period in the history of England. Dominated by war, conquest, and the struggle to balance the stability brought by royal power with the rights of the governed, it was a period that put into place the foundation of much of the world we know today. As you journey through this largely chronological narrative - occasionally interrupted for lecture-long explorations of specific topics - you'll see key themes emerge, including the assimilation of successive waves of invaders, the tense relationship between kings and the nobility, and the constant battles over money and taxation.

As I was laid up in bed due to surgery I caught a local news item about the book Meghan's Journey. I immediately went on line and purchased it for my kindle. What a remarkable story of courage, love, and resiliency. Meghan truly was someone who made a difference. After reading the book I was struck by the love and admiration of her peers and classmates and that someday in the not to distant future they will be leaders in our communities knowing Meghan will be watching over them.

Constance's mother systematically abused her daughter, both physically and emotionally, throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, the girl was so desperate she took herself off to Social Services and tried to get taken into care. When that failed, she swallowed bleach 'because it kills all known germs and my mother always told me I was a germ'…
