Santiago de Compostela was a pilgrimage site where the liturgy was accompanied by an exceptionally rich musical culture. A significant part of western polyphonic tradition was developed there. An important witness to this is the ‘Codex Calixtinus’. The manuscript volume is named for Pope Calixtus II, who had been abbot of the famous Abbey of Cluny before becoming pope in 1119. The manuscript contains Gregorian chant and polyphony in honour of the Apostle James.
Presented in a stylish 4-CD box set, here is a comprehensive recording of one of the most enigmatic manuscripts in the history of European music, preserved in the museum at the Château de Chantilly, France. ‘Anything that can be sung, can be written in music notation,’ claimed an anonymous treatise on notation in the late fourteenth century. The harmonies thus ‘captured’ on parchment represent an apex in Western music, associated with the wealthiest courts in Christendom, called ‘decadent’ by some.
Esoteric Recordings announce a new release on their recently launched Cocteau Discs imprint, a limited edition reissue of BILL NELSON’s classic 4 disc ambient boxed set "TRIAL BY INTIMACY (The Book of Splendours)”. The set was originally released on Bill’s Cocteau Records label in October 1984 and comprised recordings made by Bill at his Echo Observatory home studio. Comprising some eighty pieces of music, the set was a fine example of Bill Nelson’s grasp of Ambient music and has subsequently been hailed as a ground-breaking work. Long deleted, the set is made available once more with this newly re-mastered Cocteau Discs edition. The new release fully restores the original elements of the "TRIAL BY INTIMACY” box and is an exact facsimile, reproducing a 32 page book and eight art postcards that featured in the original set.

Tre Fontane, an ensemble of young performing musicians from Southern France, land of the troubadours, whose music they have explored extensively, have devoted the present recording to the major French Ars Nova composer Guillaume de Machaut, and leading Italian composers of the trecento, using the Codex Faenza as a central reference. Most of the time they remain fairly close to the Faenza variations on the vocal originals, with occasional extemporization.
