Marlena Shaw has been a consistently popular soul and jazz artist wordwide for over four decades thanks to anthems like "Woman Of The Ghetto" and "California Soul ". Originally released in 1979, "Take A Bite" was her third and final album for Columbia Records but unlike its predecessors, the first part of the original LP had a specific musical concept and construct. Working with highly successful disco producers Meco Menardo and Tony Bongiovi (with hits by Gloria Gaynor, etc.) and respected musical arranger/producer Harold Wheeler, the first six tracks were created as a non-stop dance music extravaganza, "Suite Seventeen," strung together with a disco reading of Frank Sinatra's "It Was A Very Good Year" and one of Marlena's famous monologues ("I'm A Foster Child").

For years our place in the universe was the subject of theologians and philosophers, but in 1960 scientist Frank Drake changed all that by using a radio telescope to search for signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence. Although the project resulted in silence, it led to one of the most seminal equations in science - the Drake Equation - which examined seven key elements necessary for ET intelligence to exist. To find out about the equation's influence, Dallas Campbell meets the scientists who have dedicated their lives to focusing on its different aspects.

Booker Ervin's debut as a leader teamed the intense tenor saxophonist with fellow tenor Zoot Sims (one will have little difficulty telling the cool-toned Zoot apart from Booker), trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist George Tucker and drummer Dannie Richmond. Ervin (who has his ballad "Largo" as a feature) performs five originals and "Poor Butterfly"; best are the slow blues "The Blue Book" and the rapid blues "The Book Cooks".

In some ways tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin was the archetypal jazz player for the post-bop 1960s, combining the tradition of Texas sax with just the hint of edgy modernism, a sort of the Delta-meets-Morocco sound so accessible that it is easy to miss the chances Ervin took with his music. Although his career was short (cancer claimed him in the summer of 1970 when he was just shy of his 40th birthday), Ervin still managed to record some 20 albums as a frontman, most notably his "book" series, The Song Book, The Blues Book, The Space Book, and this fine session, The Freedom Book, which finds him working with a rhythm section of Jaki Byard…

Drake is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy who customarily plays a little bass and is otherwise a recording engineer, mixer, and producer. He has worked with Thinking Plague, the Science Group, and out-rock types like Chris Cutler and Fred Frith, who often appear on England's ReR Megacorp label.

Tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin joined alto and soprano saxophonist Pony Poindexter in 1963 on Gumbo, based around the sights and sounds of Poindexter's birthplace, the Crescent City. Poindexter penned the majority of these compositions, providing them with evocative titles of the city: "Creole Girl," "French Market," and "Gumbo Filet." Gumbo finds Ervin playing more straight-ahead than on his exploratory "Book" sessions, which he had begun recording under his name by this time.

Drake of England was released variously to the British Empire, its commonwealths and the United States as Drake the Pirate and Elizabeth of England. In an agreeably compact fashion, the film recounts the exploits of British privateer Sir Francis Drake (played by the slightly long-in-tooth Matheson Lang), culminating with his 1588 triumph over the Spanish Armada. Athene Seyler appears as Queen Elizabeth I, bad wig and all. A goodly portion of screen time is devoted to the secret marriage between Drake and one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting (Jane Baxter). Drake of England was based on a flagwaving stage play by Louis N. Parker.
