The 24 Inventions for harpsichord by the British composer Stephen Dodgson (1924-2013) were composed over a period of some forty years. Dodgson knew of course the works of the reinventers of the harpsichord in the 20th century, including Falla, Poulenc, Martin, Martinů, Henze or Stravinski (in his Rake 's Progress), and then witnessed the decline of the enthusiasm of new composers for the " Instrument - too linked to a certain neoclassicism that had lived? The first volume of Dodgson's Inventions, published in 1955, was designed for the modern harpsichord, heavy machines with a metal frame, a mechanism closer to that of the piano, a very peculiar sound.
