Although he's often skirted the edges of blues music, at heart, saxophonist, keyboardist and composer Edgar Winter is a blues musician. Raised in Beaumont, TX, the younger brother of ukulele player and guitarist Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter has always pushed himself in new directions, synthesizing the rock, blues and jazz melodies he hears in his head.

Much more than the usual greatest-hits package, Collection is a well-thought-out compilation of the very best tracks of Edgar Winter's career. Obviously, his radio hits are here. "Frankenstein," "Free Ride," and "Hangin' Around" were all staples of mid-'70s AM radio. But Rhino Records doesn't kick this set off with any of the "hits," choosing to rock things up with a track from Edgar Winter's White Trash, "Give It Everything You've Got," before moving into the mellow blues…

A classic LP with landmark cover art.
This is the last outing of the "original MkII" Edgar Winter Group with the late great Dan Hartman and guitar hero Rick Derringer (who at the time was pretty busy-he also released "Spring Fever" that same year-which is on the Quad "to-do" list).
It is a GREAT album, going from Rock to Funk to Pop to Blues, to …prog???.
Well, whatever they did , it was always awesome , and this album is no exception.
From the opener "Cool Dance" (which is pretty cool by the way) to the closer "Chainsaw" (a very decent attempt to do another "Frankenstein"), it is a highly enjoyable ride.

Aside from the fact that Rick Derringer seems to have lost the biggest part of his voice prior to this recording, the album serves as a rocking documentation of Winter in Japan, where he is revered as a star of the highest magnitude. And why not? After all, it was Edgar Winter who led that powerhouse rock & roll band called White Trash in the early '70s. Here, he recreates the sound of that band with "Fly Away" and "Keep Playing That Rock and Roll."
