Californian whose sensual, ethereal piano & guitar compositions explore spiritual and emotional realms.
In 1986, Isaac Hayes signed with CBS Records and many hoped he would make a big comeback. Despite containing some great songs, superb production and strong and passionate vocals from Isaac this CD was very poorly promoted and it failed to get the radio airplay it deserved. Standout numbers featured include "If You Want My Lovin', Do Me Right", "It Never Rains In London", "Thank God For Love" and Isaac's crushingly soulful remake of "Hey Girl". "U-Turn" may well be one of Isaac Hayes' most obscure and underrated albums but it's well worth getting if you can find it.
Roger Hatcher's biggest claim to fame is being a cousin to Edwin Starr (aka Charles Hatcher). Unfortunately, Hatcher's success hasn't come close to Edwin's. A prolific songwriter, Roger has written more than 1,000 songs. His two biggest successes were an album cut by the Dramatics of his "I Dedicate My Life to You," and Clarence Carter's rendition of "I Got Caught," a deep soul classic. Clarence added a rap and scored on the R&B charts with the Hatcher song. Roger Hatcher was born in Birmingham, AL, in 1946. His two older brothers, Will and Roosevelt, inspired him musically – Will played sax and Roosevelt sang. Hatcher wrote his first song, "I Need Someone," at Hayes High in Birmingham, where he would develop tunes on the piano in the music room. Hatcher had no formal training and played by ear.
A totally wonderful little compilation – one that starts with a great array of 70s and 80s spacey soul, then throws in a few sweet AOR cuts, and even a few contemporary numbers too – all in this laidback, mellow-grooving style that's totally great! The whole thing's way different than the usual funk or soul compilation – and different than some of the recent AOR retrospectives, too – in that compiler Tony Monson really goes for a special vibe here, and hangs together tracks you wouldn't expect to fit so well – thanks to lots of jazzy currents and a deep blend of electric and acoustic elements.
