namdi Ogbonnaya is a multi-instrumentalist composer, producer, and performer. His musical identity was forged in the DIY community of Chicago. Relentless participation in numerous musical projects bridged genres and created inroads between scenes. Near constant activity quickly made him a locus of gravity in the community. His ubiquitous presence was satirized by a 2016 quote from Into It Over It’s Evan Weiss in the Red Eye Chicago:
“If Chicago music had elected offices, Ogbonnaya probably would be mayor.”

A spinoff of its parent magazine, Classic Rock Presents Prog takes a look at progressive music and the artists who weave them together. Each issue takes a soul-searching foray into the hearts and minds of the heroes of rock, reviewing both new and old releases. Building upon the history of some of the most genre-defining pieces ever devised and those who followed who continue to refine, revolutionise and completely discard the formulas of those who came before. Reflecting on the proud genesis of this unexpected genre, Classic Rock Presents Prog is an able tutor for those in the dark about the evolution of progressive music, and a tonic for existing fans.

Eric Alexander has had many opportunities to record as a leader for several different labels, though producer Tetsuo Hara, owner of the Japanese label Venus, has become a huge fan, recording him almost any time he travels to New York City. This 2008 session finds the tenor saxophonist with several musicians with whom he is very familiar, including pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth (the latter two who play with Alexander in the co-op band One for All)…

Ian D Hawgood - Tents And Hills (2008). Written and produced between October 2007 and June of 2008, this release actually already appeared in part (its first four tracks) as an EP on luvsound in March 2008, after which Hawgood created four additional pieces to go along with them. Like much of Hawgood's material, "Tents and Hills" merges purely synthetic and natural elements into drone meditation settings of sometimes recognizable and sometimes abstract character (the mass of sound streaming through “No Clouds” could be a piano chord stretched out indefinitely, for example, or it could be something else entirely)…

The third in Strut’s Inspiration Information studio collaboration series brings together an intriguing pairing between one of Africa’s great bandleaders, Mulatu Astatke, with the next level musicianship of The Heliocentrics collective from the mighty roster of Stones Throw / Now Again. Known primarily through the successful ‘Ethiopiques’ album series and the film soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Broken Flowers’, Mulatu Astatke is one of Ethiopia’s foremost musical ambassadors. Informed by spells living and studying in the UK and the USA, his self-styled Ethio-jazz sound flourished during the “Swinging Addis” era of the late ‘60s as he successfully fused Western jazz and funk with traditional Ethiopian folk melodies, five tone scale arrangements and elements from music of the ancient Coptic church.

Singer/songwriter Michael Bolton emerged in the mid-'80s as a major soft rock balladeer. Originally, he recorded under his real name, Michael Bolotin, turning up on RCA Records in the mid-'70s singing cover tunes and his own blue-eyed soul songs in a voice reminiscent of Joe Cocker. He then became the lead singer of Blackjack, a heavy metal band that made two albums for Polydor before splitting up in the early '80s. Looking to relaunch his career, he changed his name to Michael Bolton and signed to Columbia Records as a solo artist in 1983. Bolton's achievements include selling more than 75 million records, recording eight top 10 albums and two number-one singles on the Billboard charts, as well as winning multiple American Music Awards and Grammy Awards.

Prog rock that’s epic and intimate… dense and hummable. Soaring vocals lead into quirky instrumentals going in unexpected directions. Every Waking Hour is not ashamed to say they play prog rock. Heck, they're proud of it. Guitarist Tim Kestle boasts, "We think prog is about epic songs, spooky moods and twisting instrumental passages, and that's where we live musically". Their debut CD "Writing on the Wall" is proof positive of this.
Kestle and keyboardist/drummer/vocalist Paul McLean have been collaborating on and off for more years than they are willing to admit. They were first drawn together by a mutual love of classic prog bands like Yes and Genesis as students back in the 1970's…
