The 2013 box set The Complete Remastered Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note includes three of trumpeter Dave Douglas' albums with his String Group, as well as three albums by other artists on which he was featured. Included is 1993's Parallel Worlds, 1996's Five, and 1999's Convergence, as well as Rova's 1995 album John Coltrane's Ascension, bassist John Lindberg's 1998 release Bounce, and bassist Mark Dresser's 1994 album Force Green. With over six hours of music, this anthology compiles much of the genre-crossing, exploratory modern creative jazz that brought Douglas to the attention of the greater jazz community. With beautifully remastered sound, this Black Saint and Soul Note collection is a must-have for Douglas fans who have yet to discover this period of the prolific artist's career.

To hear many hard bop hard-liners tell it, all avant-garde jazz is nothing more than atonal screaming. The problem with such sweeping generalizations is that some avant-garde jazz is, in fact, quite musical. A perfect example is Dave Douglas' Convergence, an experimental, adventurous outing that incorporates everything from classical and chamber music to Jewish, Middle Eastern, and East European music.

There is indeed a spirit that moves through Dave Douglas' first Brass Ecstasy recording: the late Lester Bowie. Bowie's Brass Fantasy group cut a few compelling albums that combined cover versions of all sorts of music – as well as originals – that were arranged for a brass orchestra. The most famous of these, The Great Pretender, is an obvious model for Douglas on this outing. The four brass players include Vincent Chancey on French horn, Luis Bonilla on trombone, Marcus Rojas playing the tuba, and Douglas, of course, on trumpet.

Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer and educator from New York City. This album is dedicated to his older brother, Damon, who died of cancer in June 2015; and among its 11 tracks are two of the most beautiful hymns in the book, "Deep River" and "A Balm in Gilead", both played with passion, grace, and horn harmonies reminiscent of "Abide with Me" on Monk's Music. "Brazen Heart" contains a familiar, but increasingly sophisticated mix of post-bop reveries, virtuosic dazzlers, and lilting ballads. And, as with most Douglas albums, the sound quality is superb.

Dark Territory is a collection of new music from the creative electronic-inspired ensemble High Risk. Following the success of the group’s eponymous release in 2015, this new album continues to explore the intersection of creative improvisation and modern electronic music production to create a unique sound that Pitchfork described as, “simultaneously chill and surprising, it’s the sound of a group discovering a valid language, and then proceeding to push the limits of that new aesthetic”.

"Present Joys" is a studio album by trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Uri Caine which was released in July 2014 on the Greenleaf Music label. The album follows Douglas' 2012 exploration of hymns, Be Still, by including four songs from the Sacred Harp songbook. Writing for The Guardian, John Fordham called it "a 2014 jazz highlight". PopMatters' Will Layman stated "Dave Douglas and Uri Caine are good enough to stand up to making “pretty” music, even traditional music. They pass the test and come out still surprising us".
