When Don McLean was recording his second album, American Pie, in 1971, he was a little-known singer/songwriter whose first album, Tapestry, had had little commercial impact. Only a year later, when he came to make his third LP, Don McLean, he was attempting to follow up a chart-topping album that had spawned two chart-topping hits, "American Pie" and "Vincent"…

When people hear George Kelly play for the first time, the normal reaction is to wonder why they haven't heard of him before. There are many musicians around who, like George Kelly, are fine players but somehow never got the recognition due them. Born in Florida in 1915, George Kelly was one of the members of the original Savoy Sultans, led by Al Cooper, as well as having worked with Tiny Grimes, Jay McShann, and Panama Francis. He has been quoted as saying, 'I think like Lester Young and play like Coleman Hawkins'; his robust sound definitely evokes The Bean, but it is true that his meandering harmonic sense is more akin to players like Prez. This rare studio album features the compositions of a diminutive man, who was essentially the father of the modern Big Band, Don Redman.

Don McLean's second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970's Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. "American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations.

Don McLean's final album for United Artists was a musical tour de force, and the best self-contained account of the full breadth of McLean's talent. Recorded live in England, in Manchester, Bristol, London, and Oxford, the 26 songs encompassed not only the artist's best-known work, but also many of his personal favorites, among them works by other composers (including Bob Dylan's "Masters of War").

McLean went in a dozen directions on this 1977 release. There are wild tunes like "Jump" (with great piano playing by Howie Wyeth), solemn ones like "The Statue," which is a solo vocal and string quartet (15 years before Elvis Costello's The Juliet Letters), and back-to-the-roots banjo playing on "Redwing." McLean has always believed in the power of melody and worked against the stereotype he was saddled with because of "American Pie."…
