Twenty-first century life, for most people, will be an urban experience. As millions migrate to cities in search of opportunity and connection, our conception of how a city runs, uses resources and manages public services must change. The city itself must be reimagined as a matrix of functions and information, with digitized networks harnessing and multiplying the power of data.

With H.E.R., the singer and multi-instrumentalist of the same name, who declines to show her face or confirm her identity, has reconfigured the whole of her output into one long-playing album: Vol. 1 and 2 are here, along with six previously unreleased tracks. H.E.R. is soulful and soul-baring R&B, with immaculate songwriting and soothing melodies. A delicate cover of Drake's "Jungle" wrings hope from defeat, but the lush arrangement of "Rather Be" reveals a penchant for the power ballad. Daniel Caesar has the album’s lone guest spot (“Best Part”), and, together with H.E.R., they deliver a duet in the image of Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo’s timeless “Nothing Even Matters.”

Kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between Melbourne cousins Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. These were exciting times; the duo's Well Worn EP furthered the promise of 2014 EP Cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing Kllo on festival stages as well as Artists-to-Watch lists. Nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar. Kllo have officially come out the other end of the stilted estuary with twelve compositions cultivated to feel timeless and crafted, and equally current. The duo’s debut full length - and their most realized work to date - Backwater celebrates the ephemeral and the enduring changes in emotion, the downfalls and the dissolves. It’s an album that parts course with its flow, and flourishes in a lowland.

Canadian singer/songwriter Matthew Good rose to prominence in the mid-'90s fronting the popular alt-rock group Matthew Good Band. A crafty songwriter with a strong melodic sense and a somewhat brash outspokenness, Good led MGB from regional success in their native Vancouver to Juno-winning, double-platinum status over the course of four albums before the group disbanded in 2002. The following year, he made his solo debut with Avalanche, a more brooding and thoughtful stylistic departure that featured accompaniment from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on a number of tracks. A more stripped-down live approach was taken for his follow-up, White Light Rock & Roll Review, released the following year. Arriving in 2005, In a Coma compiled highlights from his years with MGB as well as more recent solo material.
