Deep Purple need no introduction as one of the all-time great British rock bands. Their association with Montreux goes back to the early seventies, when their attempt to record their album "Machine Head" at the Montreux Casino was thwarted when it promptly burnt down, forcing them to make the album in the rooms and corridors of the Grand Hotel instead…

One of the more intriguing Purple eras from over the years was their "Mark IV" lineup, which was comprised of David Coverdale (vocals), Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass), Tommy Bolin (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Ian Paice (drums). The reason being that there was no Ritchie Blackmore in their ranks, and this lineup only managed a single studio album, the oft-overlooked Come Taste the Band, and a year after disbanding in 1976, a subpar live album, Last Concert in Japan…

For the most part, live albums by rock bands are issued after a band has established themselves for a period of time and built up a repertoire that their audiences has become familiar with. In other words, few capture a band just as they had begun to find their identity and sound, such as the 2006 Deep Purple entry from their "Official Archive Collection" titled Live in Montreux 1969…

Hearing Albert Collins' icy guitar sound on disc is exciting, but watching the "master of the Telecaster" burn through a typically blistering set adds a whole other level of appreciation to the experience. He was a consummate showman whose crowd-roaming with a 150-foot guitar cord – before the advent of wireless gear – made him as famous for his live sets as his studio ones. This generous DVD delivers a two-for-one bargain, as it features Collins' first 40-minute show at Montreux in 1979 in addition to the hourlong titular set, the latter also available as a companion audio CD. He is on fire for both shows, although perhaps moving a bit more slowly in 1992, which preceded his untimely death by just a year. As was his norm, Collins stretched songs to their breaking point on-stage, and three of the seven tunes he performed in 1992 break the ten-minute mark. But his playing was so inventive and his stage presence so rousing that nothing seems overly extended or drawn out…….

Deep Purple were the biggest selling album act in America when they embarked on a 28 date tour promoting their new album "Burn". The undoubted climax of this tour was headlining the California Jam Festival at Ontario Speedway in California, in front of 200,000 people. Their explosive set is presented here on DVD for the first time. The set-list includes tracks from "Burn", as well as classics like "Space Truckin" and "Smoke On The Water". As the show came to a close, Blackmore, angered by troubles backstage, took his revenge on one of the TV cameras, before exploding his amps and destroying several guitars. It made for a visually astonishing climax to the set, and almost got the band banned from playing live in America again. This fully restored edition contains a missing track, bonus camera angles, commentaries and many other bonus options.
Even with some production shortcomings, this DVD is still highly recommended. Live In California 74 documents one of the most explosive performances ever captured on film by the MKIII incarnation of this legendary band, and also provides some of the only footage available from this historic first California Jam Festival.

To the casual fan, it's understandable to assume that the Purple lineup comprised of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice was the original, but it was Purple's best-known one, thanks to penning quite a few all-time rock anthems. However, it was not the original. When Purple started out in the late 1960s, it featured singer Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper…
