In his lifetime Pietro Antonio Locatelli was held in great esteem throughout Europe, both as a composer and as a virtuoso on flute and violin. Born in 1695 in Bergamo, he studied in Rome with Corelli and was for a time in the service of Prince Philip of Hesse-Darmstadt and of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, whom he accompanied on a number ofjourneys. By 1729 at the latest he had settled in Amsterdam, where he stayed, except for occasional concert tours, until his death in 1764. Here he founded a Collegium musicum, worked as a versatile teacher, and seems also to have advised the local music publishers, taking editorial charge of numerous works by foreign composers. His own compositions, mainly concertos and sonatas in various instrumentations, were all published between 1721 and 1762, either by Amsterdam houses or by himself.

Since bootleggers were fetching high prices for Van Der Graaf Generator rarities compilations from fans, VDGG leader Peter Hammill decided to compile ten of the best tracks and give them an official release. Since some of the tracks were never even completed, some present-day overdubbing was required, but according to Hammill in the liner notes, "all dubbing was completed in nine hours, in order to stay true to the spirit of the venture." And although the listener is warned that these are not studio quality recordings, the overall sound is consistently good. Besides, most of the people who would buy this album in the first place are the VDGG fanatics, who will be happy just to acquire this material…

Usually, the first comeback album is a pretext for a comeback tour; the second comeback album is the real test. And Van Der Graaf Generator passed that test, although fans may argue about that for years. Vintage VDGG this is not (and if you're still hoping for that, well, it won't happen). And, of course, Trisector sounds closer to a Peter Hammill solo album than any VDGG LP from the '70s. After all, drummer Guy Evans has released very few albums (let alone under his own name) during the interim, and organist Hugh Banton has released only one, while Hammill chugged out three dozens or so…

Peter Kooij is one of the leading bass singers in the early music scene, which becomes even clearer on his new CD Die stille Nacht (The silent night) with Passion cantatas for solo bass by Telemann. His agile voice, the simple, yet rich timbre, the well-dosed expressive power: All of this shows Kooijs elegant musicality and makes him an ideal baroque singer, especially for the atmospheric cantatas by Telemann. The Dutch bass, Peter Kooij, started his musical career at the age of six as a choirboy and sang many solo soprano parts in concerts and on records.
