Everything we can see with our eyes and with powerful instruments—everything we think of as atom-based matter—is only 5 percent of what we know exists. The rest of the contents of the cosmos is invisible to our current methods of detection—but something out there is holding galaxies and galaxy clusters together, and something else is causing space itself to fly apart. These invisible components are dark matter and dark energy, the most eagerly studied subjects in astronomy and particle physics today.

Fronted by charismatic singer John Robb, the Membranes formed in the wake of Punk in Blackpool in 1977. Membranes made a huge impact on the post-punk scene of the 1980s, with John Robb also establishing himself as a music journalist of note. John Peel was a huge supporter and bands as disparate as Mercury Rev, My Bloody Valentine and Big Black have cited them as an influence. After Membranes folded, John returned to the stage with Sensurround and most notably Goldblade, before rekindling Membranes a few years ago. Dark Matter/Dark Energy is the first Membranes album since 1989.

Dark energy/matter is really quite a convoluted concept in theoretical physics, reading text books on this theory will make ones head spin and explode. The 4% Universe, on the other hand, took a complex and dry mathematical construct and turned it into an intriguing tale of mystery and awe. This book also made my head spin and nearly explode, but it's from truly grasping the difficult physics idea of dark energy in a decidedly non-mathematical manner.

Join the exciting search for these mysterious phenomena in Dark Matter, Dark Energy: The Dark Side of the Universe, a mind-expanding, 24-lecture course taught by Dr. Sean Carroll, a theoretical physicist with a profound knowledge of the field. Starting with the early 20th-century work of Albert Einstein in theoretical physics and Edwin Hubble in observational astronomy, Dr. Carroll takes you through the key concepts of this revolutionary view of an expanding universe, concepts which have brought us—for the first time in history—to the brink of knowing what the universe is made of.

Evidence for the birth of the universe is raining down on you. It's called the cosmic microwave background, and it's had quite a journey. Born in the stupendous annihilation of matter and antimatter seconds after the big bang, trapped in the hot plasma of the expanding universe for 380,000 years, and then suddenly released when the universe cooled to the point that atoms could form, this echo of creation has been on an uninterrupted voyage through space for 13.7 billion years—until it reached you. The cosmic microwave background is just one of the many clues about the history and nature of our universe that make the science of cosmology a wondrous, fascinating, and philosophically profound field of study.
