With guitarist Howard Alden and trombonist Dan Barrett leading a quintet – any quintet – the results are bound to be entrancing. The twin leaders are joined by saxophonist Chuck Wilson, bassist Frank Tate, and drummer Jackie Williams on Live in '95, and the results meet all expectations. The package has also been sweetened by the guest appearance of singer Terrie Richards on several cuts. As the Alden-Barrett fan might expect, the album is loaded with standards, but the set is never overly predictable or familiar. One of the best-known cuts, the Ira and George Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm," receives an incredible nine-minute workout, while Richards' take on "Jeepers Creepers"…

This is a remarkable record by the Howard Alden-Dan Barrett Quintet. Although the group has an instrumentation of guitarist Alden, trombonist Barrett, Chuck Wilson on alto and clarinet, bassist Frank Tate, and drummer Jackie Williams, its arrangements (some by Buck Clayton) often make the band sound a bit like the John Kirby Sextet, a classic unit comprised of trumpet, alto, clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. The delightful unit uplifts such tunes as "Lullaby in Rhythm," "I May Be Wrong," Charlie Shavers' "Dawn on the Desert," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and even Thelonious Monk's "Pannonica," revitalizing small-group swing. Highly recommended.

The late Syd Barrett’s name passed into rock folklore when he quit Pink Floyd in 1968 and after two extraordinary but erratic solo albums, disappeared from music altogether amid rumours of a drug-induced breakdown. Pink Floyd went onto worldwide fame, but the absent Syd remained painfully present in their music and lyrics, most famously with Wish You Were Here and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. John Edginton’s documentary “The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story” tells the full, bizarre, tragic, but also celebratory story of Syd Barrett with contributions from friends, managers, lovers and of course the members of Pink Floyd – Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright.

The Madcap Laughs is the debut solo album by the English singer-songwriter Syd Barrett. It was recorded after Barrett had left Pink Floyd in April 1968. The album had a chequered recording history, with work beginning in mid-1968, but the bulk of the sessions taking place between April and July 1969, for which five different producers were credited − including Barrett, Peter Jenner (1968 sessions), Malcolm Jones (early-to-mid-1969 sessions), and fellow Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Roger Waters (mid-1969 sessions). Among the guest musicians are Willie Wilson from (Gilmour's old band) Jokers Wild and Robert Wyatt of the band Soft Machine…

For several years, the existence of "lost" material by Syd Barrett had been speculated about by the singer's vociferous cult, fueled by numerous patchy bootlegs of intriguing outtakes. The release of Opel lived up to, and perhaps exceeded, fans' expectations…

Psychedelic experimental band from Stockholm, Sweden founded in 2008. They started out as a trio, consisting of Max Månk (bass, organ), Claes Mikael (drums) and Walther William (guitar, organ). First the band was in raw instrumental blues tuned music, but soon they moved over to a psychedelic folk inspired territory. Then singer Mikaela joined and finally they found the sound and style reflected in their music today. The first result is their debut album 'Woodlands', released on TRAIL Records in 2012. Here they offer eleven songs which are reflecting their love for 60s psychedelia, with a preference on Pink Floyd especially, as the band name states. Also reminiscent of the endless Swedish woods the tunes are highly melodic, thus featuring a typical Nordic melancholy…

On his second solo album, Barrett was joined by Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and Pink Floyd members Rick Wright (organ) and Dave Gilmour (guitar). Gilmour and Wright acted as producers as well. Instrumentally, the result is a bit fuller and smoother than the first album, although it's since been revealed that Gilmour and Wright embellished these songs as best they could without much involvement from Barrett, who was often unable or unwilling to perfect his performance…

After a long period of indifferent recordings in the 1960s and early '70s, Rosemary Clooney underwent a renaissance after she began recording regularly for Concord in 1977. Backed by swinging ensembles and encouraged to record songbooks and special projects involving superior songs, Clooney blossomed and her career regained its momentum, continuing into the late '90s. This album finds Rosie singing 11 songs that have Johnny Mercer lyrics, including "Something's Got to Give," "Laura," "I Remember You," "Skylark," and even "Hooray for Hollywood." Joined by such fine soloists as tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, cornetist Warren Vaché, trombonist Dan Barrett, guitarist Ed Bickert, and her musical director, pianist John Oddo, Rosemary Clooney is heard in excellent form throughout the colorful program.
