Britten's first great opera, written in 1945, remains a touchstone not only for postwar opera, but also anticipates the direction that postmodern music would take later in the century. Written at a time when high modernism was in full swing, Britten bucked the trends by taking a personal, political and musically eclectic approach. It's a small story with great ramifications: A sadistic fisherman and his violent actions turn him into the bane of his community, resulting in his suicide.

Beginning in 1961, Georg Solti enjoyed a ten-year tenure as Music Director of London’s Covent Garden Opera Company, where he raised performance standards while giving British singers more prominence than ever before. These changes were not lost on Buckingham Palace, and in 1968, Covent Garden earned the right to be renamed ‘The Royal Opera’. With its orchestra he made some of his – and posterity’s – most thrilling recordings, cherished by music-lovers and audiophiles the world over.

It is a pity that so few recordings of Maria Callas in concert exist to leave the testimony of this genius of the singing and actor's play that she was. Only 5 recitals have been filmed (Paris 1958, Hamburg 1959 and 1962, Covent Garden 1962 and 1964), recorded on 3 DVD.
As promised, this is the 3rd (and last) DVD. Enjoy

No one sang Carmen or Tosca like Maria Callas and this DVD shows us exactly why.

This Tosca, made in 1953 with the forces of La Scala, is a landmark in recording history.Conducted with searing intensity by Victor de Sabata, it teams Callas with two of her closest colleagues, the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano and the baritone Tito Gobbi - a performer who could rival Callas in dramatic finesse and power. Tosca's aria 'Vissi d'arte' (I lived for art) has come to be seen as Callas's personal manifesto.

". . . [there are numerous times] when subtlety and beauty of his vocal effects take the breath away: the dazzling light and rapid fade, for instance, during the syllables of the word "lumière" [in act one] . . . Sophie Koch puts her best tonsils forward singing the agonized Charlotte of act three, while Eri Nakamura is suitably bubbly [as Sophie] . . . Villazón's ardour finds its match in Antonio Pappano's conducting. He never shrinks from the luscious ache in Massenet's music or its dramatic bustle. Nocturnal sighs; bucolic whooping; dark melodramatics: the Royal Opera House orchestra takes care of them all." ~The Times

In 1993 the late Sam Wanamaker asked Philip Pickett to form an associate ensemble to carry the name and ethos of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre around the world through concerts, recordings and broadcasts.Determined to achieve the highest possible standards of musical performance, Pickett immediately formed the Musicians of the Globe from among the very best of England’s early music instrumentalists. Together with distinguished vocal soloists they explore a colourful and varied repertoire of Elizabethan and Jacobean music, much of it inspired by Shakespeare. The nucleus of the group – a 6-part English consort of violin, recorder, cittern, lute, bandora and bass viol – can be expanded to perform large-scale programmes of 17th-century music, and the Musicians often collaborate with John Ballanger, director of Fools Paradise and England’s leading juggling jester.
