Simply put, LaVern Baker, one of the greatest vocalists in Atlantic Records' history, could sing anything, as she proved again and again during a seven-year run of chart hits that began with 1955's "Tweedle Dee" and culminated in 1963's "See See Rider." Her material, supplied by many of the era's greatest songwriters (Leiber-Stoller, Pomus-Shuman, and many others), encouraged her to draw on her gospel and big band backgrounds in exploring the emotional subtext of serious ruminations on life such as "Saved" and the powerful "Soul on Fire." The latter was her first Atlantic single, and on it she used virtually every vocal technique at her command to bring out the slow-burning sensuality of the Ahmet Ertegun-penned gem of erotic longing. Thus was notice served, and, in the glorious years that followed, Baker cut a swath wide enough that her name and label-mate Ruth Brown's were spoken in the same reverent terms, sotto voce. The 20 tracks here remain as vital today as they were indispensable to the music's evolution in her own time. –David McGee

As befits the man behind Baldrick, Tony Robinson has uncovered life in the underbelly of history. Whether it's swilling out the crotch of a knight's soiled armour after the battle of Agincourt, risking his neck in the rigging of HMS Victory, or as 'Groomer of the Stool' going to places where none of Henry VIII's six wives would venture, Tony endures the worst jobs imaginable to get to the bottom (sometimes literally) of the story. From the Roman invasion to the reign of Queen Victoria, Tony has met the challenge of seeking out the worst jobs of each era. The Gunpowder Plot drew Tony to the role of the Saltpetre Man who collected human waste because its nitrate content could be turned into gunpowder. In the same vein, he has revealed some of the worst jobs behind the building of the great medieval cathedrals. With Tony we discover the dire conditions of Nelson's Victory, where the most common form of retirement was being sewn into a hammock with a couple of cannon balls and dropped over the side. Then there's the impact of the Industrial Revolution, a source of wealth and power for the few, but a cornucopia of lousy jobs for the many.

The Future of Political Islam
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan | pages: 272 | 2003 | ISBN: 1403961360 | PDF | 1,3 mb

Fuller, a former vice-chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA, sets out to de-mystify Islam and its relationship to affairs of state in this broad survey of Islamic political movements. Attributing the rise of militant and fundamentalist Islam to centuries of Western colonialism, imperialism and cultural domination, Fuller points out that in most Middle Eastern countries, politicized Islam is often the only alternative to repressive, authoritarian regimes. To his credit, he treats this as neither an excuse nor a justification, but a simple reality. As with any other religion or political movement, Islam takes on a variety of forms: "Islamism is really a variety of political movements, principles and philosophies that draw general inspiration from Islam but produce different agendas and programs at different times."

Gergiev's is a Rite of Spring with a difference. He stresses the primitive barbarism of Stravinsky's groundbreaking score–the strange wheezings of the winds, the wild yawps of the tubas, and the deep rumblings of the bass drum. It's a Rite that stands out at a time when so many internationalized western orchestras give the piece an overlay of sophisticated polish that can rob it of the shock factor that drove the audience at the Paris premiere to riot. There are also numerous personal touches that can be controversial, such as the pause before the final chord, which may bother some but which work in the context of the interpretation. Gergiev's Rite faces strong competition from recorded versions by Markevitch, Dorati, Monteux, and Stravinsky himself, but it's definitely among the top choices. The Scriabin's less compelling, though still fascinating. Gergiev's approach tends to sound sectional, as the overall line is subordinated to momentary thrills. –Dan Davis

Mystic Masonry or the Symbols of Freemasonry and the Greater Mysteries of Antiquity
Kessinger Publishing | September 1990 | ISBN-10: 1564592715 | 288 pages | PDF | 9MB

This Great Secret, this Master's Word, was know to and preserved in the Mysteries of Antiquity, and is embodied and preserved in the traditions and symbols of Masonry today. This fact has been stated repeatedly in the body of this little book, the real purpose of which was to set students, and particularly masonic students, to searching for the real secret. It is the reward of study and devotion, and has never been obtained on any other terms. It has never been conferred in the ritualistic degrees of the lodge, and never will or can be.

English | XviD MPEG-4 codec | 1280 x 684 | MP3 VBR ~122 kbps | 25 fps | 45 min | 744 MB

"Adrenaline Rush" explores the innards of risk taking in a wide and spectacular way. From the "explosive" science and entrepreneurship of Alfred Nobel to a schoolboy's first day in class, from the boldness and determination of Henry Ford to the shy but affectionate sentiment of a teen for another, "Adrenaline Rush" brings us on a journey in the multidimensional world of risk, a world where progress of humankind or personal accomplishment aren't necessarily related to the scope or the nature of the endeavor.
"Adrenaline Rush" also teaches us that humanity can benefit from the unexpected and combined efforts of two very different risk takers whose minds meet across half a millennium and across the boundaries of the Old and New Worlds, as we witness the experiment of Leonardo Da Vinci's notorious parachute by Adrian Nicholas, world's most respected skydiver and inventor in his own right, monitored closely by Salford scientists who seek answers on critical and life pertaining matters. Incidentally, "Adrenaline Rush" doesn't hesitate to explain scientific concepts in simple words. From the soaring and breathtaking cliffs of Norway to the calm and inspiring immensity of the Mojave Desert, from Thomas Edison's laboratory to a simple American schoolyard, "Adrenaline Rush" is more than a thrilling visual experience, it's an invitation to explore our inner selves and a statement that there is no such thing as having little courage.
