August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885) is no household name, but to organists he one of the most significant figures in the history of their instrument; while his three-volume method of playing Kunst des Orgelspiels becoming a source of reference in Germany and elsewhere, his Geschichte des Orgelspiels compendium established his renown through bringing to light composers from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, some of whom had already been forgotten by the time it was published in 1884. Today he is regarded as the founder of the modern German organ school. Placing a selection of rare works alongside his more famous organ music, this collection forms a unique tribute to the German composers genius. The four Organ Sonatas are first to be presented, pieces which are all cyclical in nature, with Op.23 forming his largest composition for organ, a work of vast proportions that was dedicated to Liszt and which includes Ritters debut use of organ toccata form.

The first recording of the complete organ works by Valeri. Gaetano Valeri (1760-1822) was born in Padua, Italy, bred and raised in the “Keyboard School of the Veneto region”. A true “classical” composer he absorbed the style of Haydn and Mozart, while still under the influence of the Galant Style of Galuppi, Alberti and Turini. Valeri’s organ works contain indications of the use of certain stops, which were specific of the organs built in his time in the Veneto, by for instance the famous organ builder Callido. Valeri’s organ works form a happy mix of the Classical and Galant, strict forms containing beautiful cantabile melodies and lavish ornamentation. Italian organist Paolo Bottini chose two beautiful historic organs from Valeri’s time, the full specification of which are included in the booklet, which also contains scholarly written liner notes by the artist.

Ottorino Respighi organ music production is probably his most unknown and least considered. Yet it deserves a very special attention because, despite its minor size if compared to the entire corpus of Respighi work, it shows a very secure musical writing capacity rarely found in a non practicing organist composer. Admired by Igor Stravinskij, Alfredo Casella, Georg Gershwin, Giacomo Puccini as well as by men of science and culture like Augusto Righi, Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein and Gabriele d’Annunzio (who called him “pure and firm voice over this confused world of stutterers”), Respighi is partly inspired by Bach (whose admiration is certainly reinforced by his friendship with Ferruccio Busoni) and by Reger German School, without losing sight over the Italian masters’ music heritage.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the American William Humphreys Dayas (1864-1903) was the leading professor of piano at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He was an important figure: he studied with Liszt, was friends with Busoni and became a major pedagogue, holding teaching posts in Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Cologne before he came to Manchester in 1895. Although Dayas left only a handful of compositions, two of them are major organ sonatas - passionate, Lisztian works that have remained completely unknown until now. Dayas also arranged for organ the Thème varié for piano four hands by another forgotten American composer, Arthur H. Bird (1856-1923), a further important addition to the late-Romantic organ repertoire. Dr Jan Lehtola is one the most successful and progressive Finnish organists of his generation. He has appeared with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Lahti Symphony, Tampere Philharmonic and Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestras and the St Michael Strings.

Franz Tunder (1614-1667): another of those superbly schooled North German musicians whose name was quickly eclipsed by the great Johann Sebastian, but whose music has happily been rediscovered by the historically informed performance movement. Indeed he studied with Frescobaldi, the forebear to whom Bach himself owed much, and the Florentine influence is apparent in some of the stile antico harmony of the chorales and the dancing rhythms of the Canzona in G major.

Only in the last few years has the music of Gottfried August Homilius (17141785) begun to receive recognition for its true value, as the work of one of the most talented and individual composers in the generation after J.S. Bach. Homilius was a pupil of Bachs at the second church in Leipzig, the Nikolaikirche (Bach was Cantor of church music for the city as a whole, not only St Thomass where he was based).

Bach (94456), with some little-known musical treasures from Hamburg c.1700 complemented by a bona-fide rarity by Bach, a chorale fantasia believed to date from between 1705 and 1710 and rediscovered as recently as 2008.

Brilliant Classics continues its fascinating survey of Pre‐Bachian keyboard music with a new recording of the complete organ works of Nicholas Bruhns. Bruhns, born into a musical dynasty, was organist, violist and violinist in Copenhagen, pupil of the famous Buxtehude, where he remained till his death, only 31 years old. Bruhn’s works make full use of the many newly developed possibilities of the organ in his days, and form a splendid display of keyboard (and pedal!) virtuosity, and intricate counterpoint. To complement Bruhns’ complete organ works this recording presents other works by Sweelinck (his famous Chromatic Fantasy), Scheidemann, Scheidt and Buxtehude. Adriano Falcioni is one of the foremost organists of this time, winner of many international competitions. He already made several organ recordings for Brilliant Classics (Franck, Muffat, Couperin, Duruflé). Includes liner notes by the artist and an artist biography. Contains specifications of the magnificent organ of the Chiesa di San Giorgio in Ferrara, Italy.

…Harald Vogel is an authoritative proponent and guide through all aspects of this music, and the quality of his playing, and of the recordings and choice of instruments can hardly be faulted. Already recognised as interpretations and recordings without equal, certainly in a complete edition, this set has to be considered the current Buxtehude standard bearer.
