Handel's organ concertos enjoy a wide popularity, they are brilliant concert pieces, in which the organ plays a joyous, "worldly" part. Christian Schmitt is one of the most promising young organists in Germany, having won several international competitions. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs interest in the organ would seem to be fairly limited, at least judging by the number of pieces he composed for the instrument. The reasons for this attitude could be personal and professional, but could also reflect the changing affections and the new sensibility of the period, since during his lifetime the organ underwent a phase of relative decline. Indeed, following the acme reached by Johann Sebastian Bach, the instrument sank into a phase of neglect in Germany during the second half of the 1700s.

Adriano Falcionis recordings on Brilliant Classics of a diverse repertoire, from Couperin to Bruhns to Franck, reveal an uncommonly versatile artist, and one who relishes the colouristic possibilities of each particular instrument at hand: he has recorded the complete sonatas of Alexandre Guilmant on a richly caparisoned, eminently suitable four-manual organ from 1897 by Carlo Vegezzi-Bossi, who was one of the foremost Italian builders around the turn of the last century.
Simon Preston's recordings of the complete set of Handel's organ concertos with Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert was the first to use the latest musicological research by Anthony Hicks. These recordings remain unsurpassed from a scholarly point of view, and the performances themselves remained a benchmark for at least a decade. They may not be the best versions available now but still have a lot to offer. Preston's performances are alert and still sound very vibrant and strong, yet it must be confessed that the rather harsh sound of Preston's instrument in Opus 7 verges on becoming joyless at times.
