The Children of Palomar is Gilbert Hernandez's much-anticipated return to the small Central American town of Palomar, more than a decade after his last "Heartbreak Soup" story. Originally released as a three-issue magazine series titled New Tales of Old Palomar in the acclaimed international "Ignatz" format, these stories are finally collected into one handsome book. All of these stories deal with the classic characters of Palomar (and stand alone from the series) such as sweet Pipo, her sharp-tongue sister Carmen, sheriff Chelo, and the gang of boys who help start it all: studious Heraclio, tall and fey Israel, disfigured but goodnatured Vicente, and girl-crazy Jesús and Satch.

Michael Gleason's first solo effort after the demise of AD, Kerry Livgren's post-Kansas Christian band, is very solid yet eclectic in approach. After sharing lead vocal duties on AD's 1984 Time Line and 1985 Art of the State, Gleason became the sole vocalist on AD's 1986 Reconstructions with the departure of vocalist/woodwind player Warren Ham. Those that expect the same smooth, fullness with Gleason's voice from his AD days are in for a pleasant surprise, as the songs on this CD are more edgy and approach more of a jazz-pop feel.

Add equal parts Sun Ra, Fela Kuti, ’60s psychedelia, and Talking Heads’ Remain in Light-era poly-rhythmic Afrobeat, sprinkle a dash of ’70s disco with a chaser of Flaming Lips on-stage spectacle fun, then mix it one tall glass and you have the original sound of the Golden Dawn Arkestra. This is an intoxicating brew that’s best taken in doses long and slow, with a steady infectious beat.

Nick Magnus is most known for his membership in Steve Hackett's backing band in the late 70's and early 80's where he played keyboards on such important albums as Spectral Mornings, Defector and Highly Strung. Interestingly, four out of six members of the Spectral Mornings and Defector line up is present on this very album, including Steve and John Hackett on guitar and flute respectively and vocalist Pete Hicks and, of course, Magnus himself. In fairness, all of these people were also involved in Magnus' previous solo effort Hexameron, but the present album is much more in the spirit of what they did on those classic Hackett albums (and much better too)…

72 years after the end of World War 2, a group of about a dozen people visited Japan. They were born and raised in Vietnam yet consider Japan their homeland in some sense. Their fathers were Japanese soldiers who remained in Vietnam after the war, to fight for the country's independence from France. About 70 of these soldiers had families in Vietnam but suddenly went back to Japan without saying a word. The group from Vietnam arrived in Japan in October of 2017, chasing their fathers' shadows.

Jazz / Post Bop / Piano

This is one of the hottest albums of the ’70s. Recorded at Rosy’s in New Orleans in 1978 (and originally released a year later as Speak With a Single Voice), it features Galper on piano, Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone and flute, Randy Brecker on trumpet and fluegelhorn, Wayne Dockery on bass and Bob Moses on drums. The hornmen (already famous then for their hard-hitting funk-jazz group, the Brecker Brothers) comprised a blistering front line. Galper was in aggressive form, playing with an energy reminiscent of McCoy Tyner, a spirit of embellishment reminiscent of Art Tatum and a harmonic knowledge reminiscent of Bill Evans. Dockery and Moses formed a heart-pounding tandem.
