Avicenna, or Ibn Sina, the tenth-century Persian scientist-philosopher, is beyond doubt the most provocative figure in the history of thought. With a wideness of range, a vigour of thought, and a Unity of conception unequalled among the phi sophists, his thoughts extended far beyond the eastern lands, giving rise to the most complete philosophical system that the Islamic world was to have. …

Tigran Petrosian's place in history - a World Champion with a distinctive personal style - is secure. But still he is misunderstood by many of his contemporaries. As Larry Evans writes: 'Tigran Petrosian is one of the most original and mystifying players in the history of chess.'

Jonathan Swift is best remembered today as the author of Gulliver’s Travels, the satiric fantasy that quickly became a classic and has remained in print for nearly three centuries. Yet Swift also wrote many other influential works, was a major political and religious figure in his time, and became a national hero, beloved for his fierce protest against English exploitation of his native Ireland. What is really known today about the enigmatic man behind these accomplishments? Can the facts of his life be separated from the fictions?

The life and works of Charles Lamb (Volume 1)
Publisher: Troy, N.Y. Pafraets Book Co. | ISBN: not set | edition 1899 | PDF | 306 pages | 71 Mb

As I have elsewhere told the story of Charles Lamb's life to the best of my ability, I have not thought it necessary, in editing his Letters, to tell it over again in my own words. The letters themselves contain his story at least from the year when he came of age and began in earnest the battle of his difficult and lonely life. From the year 1796 to a date preceding his death by only a few days, there are few incidents of that life that are not related or referred to in those letters. When read consecutively, and with the help of such sup- plementary information as can be provided in notes, they form an almost complete biography.

Lennie Tristano: His Life in Music (Jazz Perspectives) by Eunmi Shim

“In Lennie Tristano: His Life in Music, Shim has provided a comprehensive biographical and analytical account of one of jazz’s most important and most frequently misunderstood figures. Her insights into Tristano’s personality are well nuanced, and the focus on his teaching makes a unique contribution to the history of jazz. This vividly written study is likely to become a standard work.”
