"…The observations of the dynamic markings are scrupulous and add greatly to the excitement as they seem to be able plumb ever greater tonal depths at either end of the dynamic spectrum. Perhaps most impressive of all is the respect shown by the Mandelring's for the unnumbered quartet of 1823, which although written some 2 years prior to the great octet shows the rapidly growing style of the young Mendelssohn. They play it with the same professionalism and joy that characterises their other performances…" ~sa-cd.net

Alone or in the company of other instruments, the harp’s unique sonority can evoke either the wind blowing or the heart beating. So it is not surprising that such an instrument inspired the poet Alfred Tennyson to write, “Love took up the harp of Life, and smote on all the chords with might; / Smote the chord of Self, that, trembling, pass’d in music out of sight.” This recording takes the listener through the 20th century, building in intensity as it reveals the harp’s many facets, whether in a solo, accompaniment or chamber music setting. Through the works presented here, the V of Valérie becomes the roman V, the soloist becoming part of a quintet.

"…The whole disc is a great success. Recording quality is first rate, with the necessary clarity tempered by warmth and just the right amount of resonance. Excellent notes are by Dr. Christopher Hailey. Recommended, even if you still find Webern hard work." ~musicweb-international

Ernst Krenek - Chamber Music for Strings (trio recherche)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 401 Mb
Date: 1994

The pieces on this CD span the life of the composer from 1939-1985. It expresses a wide range of emotions. There are sombre moments appropriate for the life Ernst Krenek (1900-1991) at times endured. There are moments of triumph, and some bits of humour. Mostly, though, this is quite serious music. My own training is inadequate for a thorough understanding, and so, I am thankful for the notes from Martin Zenck. They are technical with out being pedantic…..

Alexander Tcherepnin - Chamber Music for Cello (Alexander Rudin - Victor Ginsburg) (repost)

Alexander Tcherepnin - Chamber Music for Cello (Alexander Rudin - Victor Ginsburg) (repost)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 241 Mb
Label: Vista Vera - Date: 2007

Alexander Tcherepnin (1899 – 1977) was a Russian-born composer, pianist and conductor known for his cosmopolitan style that included influences from France and the Far East. His Father was the composer Nikolai Tcherepnin. Although Tcherepnin's style was Russian at heart, it lacked much of the Romantic melancholy and overt nationalism seen in other Russian-born composers. Instead, his earlier works are characterized by a French leanness and clarity and an emphasis on the clean articulation of form.

Label: Biddulph Records - Date: 1999

For me, Elmar Oliveira is probably the most under-rated violin soloist out there. His technique is flawless, his tone warm and somehow his own, his phrasing is nothing less than magic, here is a true artist of the violin for you, no doubt about it whatsoever.
Guillaume Lekeu was a student of Cesar Franck, who many beleieve wrote the best sonata ever written for violin. The Lekeu sonata was written for the legendary violinist Eugene Ysaye. This is a …….

Label: CPO - Date: 2012

Lovers of rare 20th-century chamber music should find something to enjoy on this new CD from CPO, which includes two early works from the 1940s, the Clarinet Sonata, Op. 28, and 12 Miniatures for Flute and Piano, Op. 29, plus two works from the 1980s, the solo Bassoon Sonata, Op. 133 (1981), and the Trio for Flute, Viola, and Harp, Op. 127 (1980). To my ear, the Trio sounds atonal, but since I'm not a musician I can neither affirm nor refute this. The recorded sound is first-class.

Label: Cedille - Date: 2005

American Midwest-born composer Easley Blackwood achieved international attention through his work in microtonality, but sustained his reputation through two periods of more conservative composition. His experiments in use of a 19-note, evenly tempered scale remain significant, even after his settling on a musical language that pre-dates the twentieth century. His four decades at the University of Chicago afforded him a base from which he was able to refine his structural ideas and train another generation of American composers. Blackwood also achieved acclaim as a pianist in both his own works and those of his contemporaries…….

Chamber music breaks exciting new ground with these three works by leading American composers. Aaron Jay Kernis’s beautiful Two Awakenings and a Double Lullaby is a touching song cycle for the unusual combination of soprano, violin, guitar and piano. In the rhythmically agile Aged Tunes, Jorge Liderman contrasts the sonorities of guitar and string quartet. Steven Mackey’s Measures of Turbulence, explores the gonglike multiphonic sounds of acoustic and electric guitars. Each of these new pieces was written for the artists who perform them here.
