It's not often that a musician with a unique instrument crosses into daily popular music news. However, for accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, Deutsche Grammophon's latest signing, her musical taste may propel her to unorthodox stardom. Her DG debut comes in the form of Bizet's Carmen, which Ms. Sidorova has reimagined as a new musical endeavor that many have more than likely never heard before. An accordion doing opera, yes, is quite a feat in and of itself. With the production's iconic melodies and track list, an accordion reinterpreting such a narrative could give way to an entirely new perspective on the genre.

This is a problem recording, and even fans of Leonard Bernstein and Marilyn Horne will find it odd. The Maestro's tempi are weirdly slow, Horne sings the role note-by-note rather than phrase-by-phrase, and when she finally does decide to emote, in the final scene, she sounds like she's gone loony. James McCracken was an artist with a huge but unappealing voice who also had brains and power, but he's no delight for the ear.

On the eve of his centenary in 2018, Sony Classical releases the most important collection, Leonard Bernstein’s classic American Columbia recordings, remastered from their original 2- and multi-track analogue tapes. This has allowed for the creation of a natural balance (for example, between the orchestra and solo instruments) that brings the quality of these half-century-old recordings, excellent for their time, up to the standards of today’s audiophiles. In addition, there has been a meticulous restoration of some earlier masterings in which LP surface noise was too rigorously eliminated at the expense of the original brilliance.

Carmen Gomes has won many awards in the Netherlands and surrounding areas. Like so many new European singers, she sings in English. Her style is bluesy and intimate with a sexy voice that's sweet as dark tupelo honey, and her interpretations are unerring. Idea of this album would take on the challenge of reinterpreting Harry Belafonte's "Belafonte Sings the Blues" was originally suggested by Harry van Dalen, owner of the eminent High End audio shop Rhapsody. He thought that Carmen’s band would be perfect for reinterpreting the mood and the sound of the classic album.
