The subject of whether we need another recording of this just-about-the world's-most-popular opera, which already boasts a half-dozen very fine ones available, is beside the point. Fans of opera's most volatile and fascinating couple, Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, will both want and need this set. It's handsomely conducted by Frenchman Michel Plasson; most of the supporting cast, chorus, and orchestra are French, and this gives the work the true Gallic flavor many other performances are missing.

On a journey through Spain, the French writer Prosper Merimee (Jay Benedict) is forced by fate to be the witness of a story of passion. The free, enigmatic nature of a woman called Carmen (Paz Vega), her southern beauty, her passionate, impulsive character turn the sergeant, Jose (Leonardo Sbaraglia), into the victim and protagonist of a fatalistic chain of extraordinary events, turbulent loves, uncontrollable passions, jealousy and bloodshed. Aranda brilliantly casts Spains manliest actress of the moment Paz Vega to play Carmen in the kind of steamy role she revels in, with one of the most popular actors in Latin American Cinema today, Leonardo Sbaraglia (Intacto, Utopia) playing the role of Jose.

Anyone with even a passing interest in the sultry, enigmatic and sensual music of Sorabji needs to have this set. It is a most thoroughly engrossing anthology from a brilliant pianist who is a veteran in Sorabji terms. He has lived with and reflected on this music for approaching forty years. Time and again while listening to this set I was struck by his loving attention to detailing, voicings and speeds. The music communicates Sorabji's striving after transcending the limitations of keyboard, of mechanical action and of the pedestrianly objective.

On the eve of his centenary in 2018, Sony Classical releases the most important collection, Leonard Bernstein’s classic American Columbia recordings, remastered from their original 2- and multi-track analogue tapes. This has allowed for the creation of a natural balance (for example, between the orchestra and solo instruments) that brings the quality of these half-century-old recordings, excellent for their time, up to the standards of today’s audiophiles. In addition, there has been a meticulous restoration of some earlier masterings in which LP surface noise was too rigorously eliminated at the expense of the original brilliance.

Despite the scandal it created when first staged in 1875, Carmen has subsequently become one of the worlds most popular operas. The love affair at its heart shocked contemporary audiences but the music is imperishably vibrant and exciting so much so that, after the composers death, his friend Ernest Guiraud arranged two suites from the opera. Here the Toreadors Song and the graphically sensuous Seguidilla and Habanera dances are heard in all their orchestral glory.

American Flyer was a ’70s folk-rock quartet made up of former members of other groups: Craig Fuller was from Pure Prairie League, Eric Kaz had been a member of Blues Magoos, Steve Katz was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Doug Yule had played in the Velvet Underground. Together they charted with two albums on United Artists in the mid-’70s.
