Trout Mask Replica is Captain Beefheart's masterpiece, a fascinating, stunningly imaginative work that still sounds like little else in the rock & roll canon. Given total creative control by producer and friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart and his Magic Band rehearsed the material for this 28-song double album for over a year, wedding minimalistic R&B, blues, and garage rock to free jazz and avant-garde experimentalism.

On April 12th, 1972, in the middle of the European leg of the tour Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band stopped off at the Beat Club studios in Bremen to film a session for later transmission. Of the four song session filmed that day only one track has ever been broadcast. The session kicks off with a bass solo entitled `Mascara Snake'. This short piece was named after a former member of the Magic Band Victor Hayden, who had appeared on the Trout Mask Replica album…

Produced by Captain Beefheart himself, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was a further refining and exploration of the musical ideas posited on Trout Mask Replica. As such, the imaginative fervor of Trout Mask is toned down somewhat, but in its place is an increased self-assurance; the tone of Decals is also a bit darker, examining environmental issues in some songs rather than simply concentrating on surreal wordplay…

Considered by many to be a substandard effort due to the circumstances of its release (producer Bob Krasnow, the owner of Blue Thumb, the label which debuted with this album, remixed the album while Don Van Vliet and crew were off on a European tour, adding extraneous sound effects like heartbeats and excessive use of psychedelic-era clichés like out-of-phase stereo panning and flanging), 1968's Strictly Personal is actually a terrific album, every bit the equal of Safe As Milk and Trout Mask Replica…

Generally acclaimed as the strongest album of his comeback, and by some as his best since Trout Mask Replica, Doc at the Radar Station had a tough, lean sound owing partly to the virtuosic new version of the Magic Band (featuring future Pixies sideman Eric Drew Feldman, New York downtown-scene guitarist Gary Lucas, and a returning John "Drumbo" French, among others) and partly to the clear, stripped-down production, which augmented the Captain's basic dual-guitar interplay and jumpy rhythms with extra percussion instruments and touches of Shiny Beast's synths and trombones…

On November 11, Rhino Records will celebrate the music of avant-garde iconoclast Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, with a new four-CD box set. SUN ZOOM SPARK: 1970 to1972 focuses on the period following the release of his career-defining 1969 album Trout Mask Replica. During that creatively fertile patch, Beefheart released three albums that have long lingered in the shadow of Trout Mask and even of Beefheart’s Richard Perry-produced debut Safe as Milk. SUN ZOOM SPARK revisits these three albums – Lick My Decals Off, Baby, The Spotlight Kid, and Clear Spot- in freshly remastered editions, and adds a fourth disc containing fourteen previously unreleased outtakes and alternates from Beefheart and his Magic Band cohorts. Housed in a 7½ x 7½ picture box - still sealed in stickered shrinkwrap.

Although it was rendered obsolete by the release of the superior The Dust Blows Forward: An Anthology, this career retrospective is noteworthy for a few reasons. It concentrates exclusively on Beefheart's work for Virgin — Unconditionally Guaranteed, Blue Jeans and Moonbeams, Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Doc at the Rader Station, Ice Cream for Crow, and the Light Reflected Off the Oceans of the Moon EP — so it may interest people who already own Trout Mask Replica and want to get only one more Beefheart album, as well as those who have difficulty finding his aforementioned Virgin releases. Also, the compilation intersperses brief snatches of Beefheart's songs in between the 18 complete songs on this album — mostly spoken word excerpts from "Apes Ma," "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat," "Cardboard Cutout Sundown," ""8!" Poop Hatch," "Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee," "Party of Special Things to Do," and "Flavor Bud Living." This appears to be an unsuccessful attempt to make this compilation seem more like a cohesive album by recreating the informal ambience of Trout Mask Replica; most people will probably find it annoying, but some may enjoy it. Otherwise the album contains numerous good songs but omits some of Beefheart's best material from his Virgin period, such as "Ashtray Heart" and "Hot Head."
