The Paul Horn Quintet - Here’s That Rainy Day (1966/2016) [Official Digital Download 24/192]

The Paul Horn Quintet - Here’s That Rainy Day (1966/2016)

This a fabulous Paul Horn album, but you must accept that it is something of a "period piece" which was designed to have broad, mass, commercial appeal at that time (1966) and, for whatever reason, simply didn't (and I like to think that that was because it was simply too good! Paul's tone on the flute, alto flute and bass flute (often rendered without any vibrato at all) is gorgeous and his musical concept is unique. The tunes are very short, so he doesn't get a chance to stretch out much, but it does't really matter, because the stark simplicity in his lines (both on the heads and the improvising) is every bit as bold as it is striking. And (you may be surprised to hear me say this but I mean it) his musical style has the same stark clarity, simplicity and honesty that I have only heard from John Coltrane on the classic Ballads album.

Felix Klieser first began to take a serious interest in the Horn Trio of Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) at the age of thirteen. Back then he was just a junior student at the College of Music and Drama in Hanover. He bought several different recordings of the work, including one featuring the hornist Peter Damm, whom he was later to meet at a master class in Dresden. “I picked up quickly that Felix was extraordinarily talented. He was able to elicit from the horn a soft, warm sound, a distinctly Romantic horn tone,” says the former horn-player of the Dresden Staatskapelle in high praise of Klieser in the booklet text to the young musician’s new CD entitled “Horn Trios”, released on the Berlin Classics label on September 29, 2017.

Verve's Ultimate Shirley Horn may not live up to its billing, but the budget-priced collection is nevertheless a terrific introductory sampler. Diana Krall selected the 17 songs on the compilation; she also wrote the liner notes, and she has done an excellent job of summarizing Horn's latter-day recordings for Verve, which is when Horn truly began to hit her stride. Some may argue that a favorite or two are missing, but by and large, these 17 songs capture the essence of Horn, which is enough to make this a worthwhile sampler.

Live at Midem with Stan Getz, Paul Horn, Mike Garson, and Jazz Gala '80 are a continuation of a new tradition at Midem — a performance and recording of major jazz artists and the up and coming international jazz stars at the world record convention. Stan Getz traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, taking leave from a gig at Bubba's and arrived in Cannes with his musicians: Andy Leverne, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Victor Jones, on the morning of the 23rd of January '80. The show and recording session were that evening taped with a twenty-four track mobile unit from Paris. Paul Horn was in Cannes for Midem, having traveled from his home in Canada. Sugar Blue and Patrick Artero arrived the day before by train from Paris, and Gayle Moran, Joe Farrell and Mike Garson suffered a time differential of nine hours between the South of France and their homes in Los Angeles. The show's form and substance took shape at the rehearsel. Jean Claude Ast, the French assistant producer orchestrated the complex rehearsel schedule with musicians and technical people staying at dozens of hotels in Cannes.
