The second album from Scottish electro-pop producer Calvin Harris comes with some fanfare, following as it does a couple of chart-topping singles – “I’m Not Alone” and the inspired link-up with Dizzee Rascal, “Dance Wiv Me”. The first thing that’s clear is that Harris’ proper pop status has beckoned in a clear tweak of style. Ready For The Weekend tones down some of the irony and idiosyncrasy of his sporadically enjoyable 2007 debut I Created Disco, in favour of a more straightforward club sound: less wonky character, but more songs that should impact on dancefloors and, indeed, radio playlists. “The Rain” balances sadness and uplift neatly, plaintive synths colliding with funky electro basslines and deranged saxophone, while “Ready For The Weekend” comes fitted with a big disco hook courtesy of vocalist Mary Pearce. In the words of Harris himself, it’s “stadium dance” – and while that means more hits-in-waiting, it also means potentially smart numbers like “Worst Day”, featuring fast-tongued MC Izza Kizza, feel like they’ve had some of the character bleached out. Still, it’s clearly a record that plays to Harris’ strengths, and if you’ve enjoyed the hits so far, there’s clearly more where they came from.

"The summer starts right here. At least, that's what the blurb says. But to be fair, that's what the tune tells us as well. Calvin Harris told us tonight that he is in a feel good mood. That music can take you to a happier place, and he's ready to spread the joy. Sounds like the new album is going to be smiley affair. Good news.
We need more smiles right now. So, the question is, is everybody ready for the weekend?" - Zane Lowe - BBC

We're not sure what the title means originally, but over the past few decades, it's come to stand for some heavy heavy guitar work from the legendary Calvin Keys! Keys has a very unique touch here – a mix of open chords and tighter lines – beautifully wrapping up a history of soul jazz guitar that stretches back to the early 60s – then propelling things forward with loads of righteous 70s spiritual jazz energy! The set also features loads of sweet keyboards – played by Larry Nash, and mixed with flute and "hose-a-phone" from Owen Marshall – set to grooves from Lawrence Evans on bass and Bob Braye on drums. A stone classic from the Black Jazz label – and titles include "Gee Gee", "BK.", "BE", and "Shawn-Neeq".

Since departing from the urban R&B group Undacova in the late '90s, Calvin Richardson has recorded infrequently. While his 1999 debut nu-soul set, Country Boy, was a knockout, it was critically underappreciated. He followed this in 2003 with another fine album, 2:35 P.M., and When Love Comes in 2008. That said, his 2009 offering, Facts of Life: The Soul of Bobby Womack, a full-length tribute to one of his primary influences, is a wildly ambitious but logical step. The dangers in doing a tribute to a legendary artist, especially Womack, one of soul music’s most storied and colorful legends as both a singer and songwriter, is a daunting task. But Richardson’s and Womack’s voices are very similar, though the latter’s is not as rough as the former’s and has more gospel in it, which works very well in adding to most of these songs.

Although more Grandmix editions have been made like the 80's and 90's editions, this marks the 28th annual Grandmix and is broadcasted on Radio 538. Unfortunately some foreign record companies consider the Grandmix as just another compilation license request. Their lack of knowledge of DJ and mix history sometimes leaves them stuck in unnecessary restricting company policies. All Dutch dance related companies are no problem, as most of the people working there got into the dance music business because of the early Grandmixes. Armada, Spinnin' and News are absolutly fabulous in their cooperation for which I, in return, am very greatful.

The popular music entity compiled its year-end lists in a number of categories, but the Hot 100 is the most widely recognized of all. Ed Sheeran reigns with the top honor thanks to his massive hit Shape of You, followed by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee with Despacito featuring Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars with That’s What I Like, and Kendrick Lamars Humble. No act in electronic music had quite the staying power on the charts as The Chainsmokers did in 2017. The duo appears on Billboards year-end Hot 100 Songs for Something Just Like This with Coldplay. Zedd holds it down with one of the biggest songs of the year, Stay featuring Alessia Cara. Kygo x Selena Gomez hit mark for It Aint Me.
