This collection features works by various luminaries in the international avant-garde performing works by or in memoriam of the iconoclastic composer John Cage. Performances range from David Tudor's electronic explorations to Patrick Moraz's performance of Cage's "Dances for Prepared Piano." The irony will not be lost on fans of Cage's work that a recorded tribute album for a composer who disliked the recorded medium is at best a strange tribute.

Label: Catfood Records | Tracks: 12 | Rls.date: 2016

Johnny Rawls was 2014 Living Blues Male Blues Artist of the Year. He has been nominated for Blues Music Awards Male Soul Artist eight years in a row and won BMA Soul Album of the Year. Soul Brothers by Johnny and Otis Clay was one of the two highest rated blues albums on the 2015 Downbeat Magazine's Best of the Year list. Tiger In A Cage has Curtis Mayfield style social commentary in the title song about 19 year old lives being over once they are sent to prison. There are also several of his good time party songs including a remake of his hit, Red Cadillac, with The Rays. This album is more funk than Rawls' previous releases but still has the old school groove of the master backed by his eight piece studio group, The Rays, with added percussion and background vocals. Like vintage wine or single malt scotch, Johnny Rawls just keeps getting better with age.

Amadinda Percussion Group - 4'33" (The Music of Varèse, Chávez, Cage & Harrison) (1993)

Without a doubt this is the most splendid recording of 4'33" available to date. The Amadinda Percussion Group brings a sensitivity & brio to the piece that have rarely been approached. The tempo is a bit faster than usual but this is a welcome change that resonates closer to Cage's intention. The sound quality is first-rate: every nuance is finely chiselled to perfection while the dynamics are tracked with absolute fidelity.

On the heels of their recent unplugged tour, Grammy-winning band Cage the Elephant will release an acoustic album titled Unpeeled this summer via RCA Records. The album was recorded during a series of acoustic shows in cities like Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Knoxville and Nashville. Unpeeled features 18 curated songs from the band’s past four albums as well as three retooled existing songs, performed live and stripped down — in some cases with a string quartet and a choral accompaniment. “It was really all about the balance of the intimacy and the delicacy of how we approach playing these songs live acoustically and with strings as we hadn’t done before,” said guitarist Brad Shultz about the inspiration behind the album. “We were very transparent, and we found the more honest you can be with yourself, the more honest you can be with everyone else.”

Boulez the Enfant Terrible. He revealed the lineage of 20th-century composition like no one else. His earliest recordings, dating from 1958-67, are with Domaine Musical, the French ensemble he formed in 1954. Works by Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Varèse, Messiaen, Stravinsky, and his own music (including two recordings of Le Marteau sans Maître) dominate the recorded Domaine repertoire. A smattering of his modernist contemporaries, Pousseur, Stockhausen, Berio, Henze, Cage, and others are included. Also included is a performance of Stravinsky’s Agon, with Hans Rosbaud conducting the Orchestre du Sudwestfunk, Baden-Baden.

I played my first show at 11. When I saved enough money to buy a 4 track recorder, I used to go around pounding on different things to create a series of noises. Then I would try and combine them to make some kind of weird noise symphony. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would eventually help me hone my producing and writing skills. Speaking of symphony, my father, who loved classical music, would trade me time listening to different things. He would play me a half hour of Sibelius, and I would play him a half hour of AC/DC. I would usually fall asleep about half way through his set, but that was huge in my progression as a songwriter.

John Cage: Early Piano Music comes from Herbert Henck, an experienced hand with the work of Cage, having previously recorded Music for Piano, Music of Changes, and Sonatas and Interludes in addition to a mighty swath of first-tier twentieth-century literature for piano for various labels, most notably Wergo and ECM New Series. These are early works for standard, not prepared, piano, and some of these pieces will be as familiar to dyed-in-the-wool Cageans as "Happy Birthday." This puts the pressure on Henck to excel, and he does so spectacularly well here. The disc includes the two sets entitled Two Pieces for Piano, the piano version of The Seasons, Metamorphosis, In a Landscape, Ophelia, and the fragmentary Quest. The pieces date from 1935 to 1948, the same range covered by pianist Jeanne Kirstein in her pioneering 1967 survey of Cage's piano music for CBS Masterworks.
