"The Sordid Hypocrisy of To Protect and To Serve" … …is a savage indictment of the worst police practices in America. The Los Angeles Police adopted the motto "To Protect and To Serve" in 1955. In 1991 the videotape beating of Rodney King horrified the nation and tarnished – perhaps forever – the LAPD's reputation.

Now, following the recent release of Loom’s Music Box Ballerina album, Ulery is releasing a CD of beautiful, composed scores that are intended for film. The album, Themes and Scenes, contains seven pieces that are arranged for strings, brass, and percussion and accompanied by Wurlitzer electronic piano.

The Best and Beyond doesn't feature original versions. Presumably put together at some point during the 2000s, this features re-recordings from Gino Vannelli and his band. Dedicated fans might notice that "The Surest Things Can Change," first released on A Pauper in Paradise (1977), even gets a rewrite, but they probably wouldn't give this a second glance since it has the appearance of a basic best-of. That's part of the disc's problem; while these re-recordings are of decent quality and couldn't possibly rival the originals, one would have to be a keen observer – and notice the production credits on the back – to see that it serves a purpose different from a typical compilation.

With every recording Omar Sosa releases, his horizons continue to broaden within the context of world ethnic fusion, but with Across the Divide, he's bettered himself yet again. This collection of jazz-influenced, Latin-tinged music crosses the disparate genres of country folk and tribal sounds, recognizing the migration of the banjo from Africa to the Eastern seaboard of America, and percussion from the griot village to the rural Mid-Atlantic. In collaboration with vocalist and story teller Tim Eriksen, Sosa merges rhythm and ancestry via inspiration from Langston Hughes, John Coltrane, King Sunny Ade, Pete Seger, and contemporary bluesman Otis Taylor as popular reference points.

Genre: Ambient, Modern Classical | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Shadowplay/Muzyka Voln (SPR 101, MV-III)

Sphere Rex plays ambient in uncommon for today traditional vein, combining minimalism and "background"-style of electronic music a la Brian Eno and piano improvisations based on proto-ambient ideas of Erik Satie. This music is able to calm down and lull to sleep like alpha-wave rhythms or paint weird images guided by the surreal titles of compositions in one's imagination. For the goals of complete authenticity only analogue devices were used in recordings, as well as tube preamps and compressors from 60s-70s.
