Born To Be Wild is a three-part series telling the story of the rise and fall of the golden age of American rock from the late 60s to the early 90s. This was a time when singers were gods, guitarists were axe men and songs were anthems, forging the soundtrack to the nation one stadium at a time. Born out of revolution, it initially scared the hell out of the establishment but ended up becoming a multi-billion dollar industry and the sound of Middle America. It’s a tale of classic songs and big riffs through to spandex pants and huge hair. The series is set against a back-drop of three decades of seismic political and social change which American rock both reflected and ignored. The story is told by the people who were there, who lived it.

A look at the evolution of 20th-century American rock music, beginning with the days of flower power, Vietnam and LSD, when bands like the Doors, Jefferson Airplane and MC5 sang about ‘the revolution’. The first episode concentrates on the late 1960s, exploring the artists that made the soundtrack to the Peace and Love generation, culminating in the Woodstock music festival. However, the event proved a watershed moment for rock music’s reactionary era, as the marketeers lined up ready to turn this kind of output from protest into profit.

This is a long-awaited video from the legendary Steppenwolf, especially for those of us who could not make it to see them live in the past. Notwithstanding a lot of changes and age, the band and John Kay have survived just fine which showed in their solid performance. It looks like the bass part was pre-recorded but the rest is a pure live rendition of Steppenwold classics. Unfortunately, I have never heard any songs from 'Slow Flux', their greatest album in my opinion but even so the Hammond organ sound and the John Kay's voice bring us back to the glorious years of classic rock. ~cdUniverse
