Here is another LP helping from the Keith Jarrett "American" Quartet's last recording session – one that is almost as consistent in quality as its predecessor. The happy-go-lucky groove of the title track perfectly expresses its name, with Jarrett blithely singing along; both Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden get plenty of solo space on Redman's "Gotta Get Some Sleep" and Haden's "Pocket Full of Cherry" (a pun referring to Haden cohort Don Cherry); and Paul Motian remains a marvelously flexible drummer. Moreover, there is another fascinating swatch of Middle Eastern experimentation on "Pyramids Moving."

Before Sun Ra began navigating the cosmic flux and piloting passengers across the universe, the bandleader Herman "Sunny" (or "Sonny") Blount (b. Birmingham, Alabama, 1914) was developing his musical craft in Chicago. In the early and mid-1950s that meant collaborating with artists in the fields of doo-wop, rhythm & blues, late-period big band jazz, and urban soul. History reveals that before Sun Ra was an orchestra leader, he was a session leader.

Put veteran trumpeter Eddie Henderson with master pianist Kenny Barron and New Orleans-bred alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, and the music will go deep. Bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Mike Clark also bring versatility and momentum to a varied set, including Henderson’s transformation of “After You’ve Gone” (a Swing Era burner) into a lush ballad and John Coltrane’s “Naima” into a bright waltz. With Miles Davis’ “Fran-Dance” and Woody Shaw’s “The Moontrane,” Henderson honors fellow trumpet greats in compelling style.

Brothers John and Jeff Clayton are very much in the Wynton Marsalis-originated school of revisionist jazz, which holds that the clock should be turned back to the 1945-1965 era of bebop, post-bop, hard bop, and cool jazz, with Ornette Coleman's free jazz innovations left out, and of course not a hint of fusion. On their fifth album, the brothers are joined by their regular pianist, Bill Cunliffe, and newly added trumpeter Terell Stafford, with drummer Jeff Hamilton (also of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra) rejoining.

On his second album for Impulse!, recorded August 18-September 24, 1998, Donald Harrison continues to proselytize for what he called "nouveau swing" on his first date for the label, even going so far as to sing/rap an explanation of his concept in "Nouveau Swing (Reprise)." Essentially, what he seems to mean by the term is that, within an acoustic quartet setting, he intends to introduce elements of a number of musical genres, for example covering the Meters' funk anthem "Cissy Strut" and having drummer John Lamkin use a reggae feel for "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," the Sigmund Romberg standard he previously recorded on For Art's Sake.

Frode Gjerstad’s name can be legendary in Norway and all the European continent, due to the fact that he was practically the only one to contrast himself, from the beginning, to the saxophone style which defined the Scandinavian approach to jazz for 40 years, the one defined by Jan Garbarek, but his trio with Jon Rune Strom and Paal Nilssen-Love is relatively new on the scene.

This release includes all five of Be Bop Deluxe's studio albums, with additional bonus tracks, plus an additional disc of previously unreleased home demos, rough studio mixes and live recordings. The recordings have all been freshly remastered and the project over-seen by Bill Nelson. All bonus tracks added to the 1990 CD releases have been remastered and added to this release too, except for the bonus live tracks on the 'Axe Victim' release. This remaster is an improvement upon the 1990 releases, and has thankfully avoided being 'brick-walled'. I would suggest this is the last word on digital 16-bit releases of these studio albums.
