The Prestige label is a byword in jazz circles, founded in 1948 by Bob Weinstock he launched a series of subsidiary labels buoyed by its unprecedented success. One of the more successful of those sister labels was Bluesville, which proceeded to release some truly legendary blues artists in the shape of Lightnin' Hopkins, Victoria Spivey and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Sometimes in acoustic settings and in others with full accompaniment the labels' roster shone brightly no matter how they were presented, so enjoy the blues men and women of Bluesville doing what came naturally.

John Lee Hooker developed a “talking blues” style that became his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta tradition, his metrically free approach and unique sound would make him a staple of the Detroit blues tradition. Often called the “King of the Boogie,” Hooker's driving, rhythmic approach to guitar playing has become an integral part of the blues. His thunderous electric guitar sounded raw, while his basic technique was riveting.

The concept behind Blues at Sunrise is a good one: collect ten of SRV's best slow blues numbers, primarily from the official studio albums but also a couple of unreleased cuts and rarities, and sequence them as if they were a lost studio album. It's a neat idea, especially when it's packaged in artwork that deliberately evokes memories of classic blues albums from the '60s (there's even a fake, faded record ring on the front and back covers), and it's hard to fault the music here. All the obvious selections are here – "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up on Love," "The Things (That) I Used to Do," "Leave My Girl Alone." And the rarities are all worthwhile, including a live "Texas Flood" from the Live at the El Macambo video…

In the mid '60s the Chicago based label Vee Jay put out a Hooker LP entitled 'Is he the world's greatest blues singer?', well, it is safe to say now that Hooker is certainly a prime contender. Despite being labelled as an anachronism. Mr. Hooker has proved to be with B.B. King the most successful of all blues artists. A big seller to the black audiences of the late '40s/early '50s and up today, an international celebrity.
