Swing Journal Gold Disc. Nobody would argue that Bill Charlap is one of the most preeminent jazz pianists of his generation. His encyclopedic knowledge of the American Songbook is second to none, and his beautiful touch, amazing skills and imagination make it a pleasure to listen to him at all times. As some of you already know, Charlap has recorded a number of great albums for Venus Records of Japan with his great New York Trio (with Jay Leonhart and Bill Stewart). For this, latest release, he decided to take a slightly different direction with a drum-less trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and bassist Peter Washington.

Beat, psychedelic rock, blue-eyed soul

His ferocious soul-drenched vocals belying his tender teenage years, Stevie Winwood powered the Spencer Davis Group's three biggest U.S. hits during their brief life span as one of the British Invasion's most convincing R&B-based combos…

Classical | Label: Signum Records

Marking the 50th anniversary of the indefatigable King's Singers, this is not, as might be supposed, a compilation, but rather an entirely new recording containing 60 tracks "that, we feel, [represent] all the styles and musical epochs that The King's Singers have championed across five decades of performing and recording." This is praiseworthy in itself; better still is how excellent the whole thing is.

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Artwork: Digital booklet

Recorded live in May 2015 at Union Chapel in London, this powerful album showcases the very best of Grammy-winning keyboardist and Snarky Puppy founding member Bill Laurance's solo catalogue. Laurence is accompanied by his Snarky Puppy bandmates Michael League on electric and upright bass and drummer Robert Sput Searight, with contributions from percussionist Felix Higgenbottom, a full string section and a French horn player. This is a truly great contemporary jazz piano concert with nods to modal jazz icon Bill Evans, post-Coltrane giants McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock and the fusion of Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea.

Actor and comedian Bill Murray met German cellist Jan Vogler on a trans-Atlantic flight. The two struck up a friendship and soon had the idea to work together on a project: New Worlds. On the album and in live performance, Murray as both singer and narrator brings his charm and wit to songs by Foster, Gershwin, and Bernstein as well as readings of classic American poetry and prose by Whitman, Hemingway, Twain and others, in dialogue with Voglers singing Stradivari cello. They are joined by violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez.

With the sudden death of his father, fourth-generation prospector Kenny Wells sees the family business, Washoe Mining, rapidly decline and him out of business. But ambitious Kenny has a dream, a vivid vision that promises mountains of brilliant and pure gold in the lush jungles of remote Indonesia; an aspiration which the well-known, yet still unlucky geologist Michael Acosta shares. Before long, down-on-his-luck Kenny will convince the eager geologist to become his partner and set off on an adventure deep into uncharted territory, while in the meantime, he would hunt for investors. Unfortunately though, as the risky expedition begins without a single speck of gold or the promise of it on the horizon, disease and failure will begin to threaten the short-lived dream. However, is it indeed an intriguingly bold and reckless fantasy?

This magnificent 12-CD set contains all of Bill Evans' Riverside recordings as a leader, an extremely important period in the influential pianist's development. The first session predates Evans' period with the Miles Davis Sextet and other significant sessions include his sets with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian (highlighted by the marathon Village Vanguard session of June 25, 1961), Evans' return nearly a year after LaFaro's death in a car accident with a new trio (consisting of Motian and bassist Chuck Israels), a sideman set with altoist Cannonball Adderley, the Interplay sessions with either trumpeter Freddie Hubbard or tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, an extensive and rather somber solo set, and a 1963 appearance at Shelly's Manne Hole with bassist Israels and drummer Larry Bunker.
