Bao Yuankai (b. 1944), is one of China's most popular and respected contemporary composers. His Third Symphony, "Beijing Opera" adapts the western late-Romantic symphonic form into a quartet of sketches of the four main characters of Chinese opera: Jing
, the Painted Face character; Chou
, the Clown; Dan
, the female lead and Sheng
, the male lead. The standard symphony orchestra is augmented with a large number of traditional Chinese percussion instruments – adding additional local color to his creative score. While Bao's music tends towards the more conservative aspects of Chinese music, his gift for melody, and imaginative orchestrations - to say nothing of the prestige and celebrity he enjoys at home - provide valuable insight into the history of China's still-young symphonic tradition.
