"Conducting the Wiener Philarmoniker 's always been something absolutely unique, starting from my debut in Salisburgo after studying in Vienna. Wondeful string section, great musical tradition and deep understanding of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss' music are typical of this group. It's a true joy making music with them. I am always very grateful when I conduct the Wieners at Musikverein or Staatsoper. It's like coming home." (Claudio Abbado)

The Gewandhaus Orchestra's history of playing the nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven extends back to 1825, when the composer was still alive, and these masterworks have been a mainstay of their repertoire ever since. After Riccardo Chailly took the helm of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in 2005, the idea of performing the full cycle for Decca under his direction became an imperative, and the recordings were made between 2007 and 2009.

The Beethoven set includes the first two piano concertos (No. 1 in two versions, one with cadenzas supplied by Glenn Gould) together with Beethoven’s only completed opera in its final version: Fidelio. He always had a strong and fervent view of freedom and its resonance still rings true today nearly two hundred years since its first performance.

Frans Brüggen first turned his attention to the music of Beethoven’s Nine Symphonies in the 1980s, using period instruments. Now, his quest undimmed, he returns to the glories of Beethoven’s orchestral music for a new cycle being issued in a sumptuous hybrid SACD box set on Glossa. Likewise undimmed is the rapport he shares with his orchestra for one of classical music’s greatest challenges by way of concert performances: Brüggen has long distanced himself from studio recordings.
