Drummer Barrett Deems is listed as the leader of this septet set but the real star is the great swing clarinetist Chuck Hedges. Jamming in a septet also including vibraphonist Don DeMichael (who was better-known as a jazz journalist), Bob Roberts on solo guitar, rhythm guitarist John Defauw, pianist Steve Behr, and bassist Wilson McKindra, Hedges and Deems perform eight vintage swing and Dixieland tunes in spirited fashion. Highlights include "Deed I Do," "Shine," "After You've Gone," and "Get Happy."

Pastor T.L. Barrett led a youth choir out of Chicago during the late '60s and early '70s, just a few years after he got on the straight and narrow path, which may help listeners understand the unique power of the material on Like a Ship… (Without a Sail). Self-released by Barrett in 1971, it communicates many things, foremost being adoration and praise and, on the title track, the lost, aimless feelings that were undoubtedly shared by many a youth in the late '60s.

Psychedelic Rock, Shoegaze, Doom Metal, Experimental, Stoner Rock, Tribute

Dwell Records specializes in the nexus point where grunge, noise, psychedelia, and, most importantly, metal meet. Fitting then that they would release this tribute comp to Syd Barrett, the madcap wonder boy who in the late '60s had a hand in inspiring all those genres. The collection features artists who run the metal gamut. Stoner legends Pentagram deliver a dynamic "Flaming" while trance-metallers Jesu drive "Chapter 24" deeper into the cosmos than Pink Floyd ever did. Prog-metal kings Yakuza tackle "Lucifer Sam" while noisy underground dwellers Stinking Lizavetta lay a guitar-heavy "Matilda Mother." Some versions are better than others, but taken as a whole LIKE BLACK HOLES IN THE SKY proves the modern reach of Barrett's vision and the breadth of his songwriting.

The late Syd Barrett’s name passed into rock folklore when he quit Pink Floyd in 1968 and after two extraordinary but erratic solo albums, disappeared from music altogether amid rumours of a drug-induced breakdown. Pink Floyd went onto worldwide fame, but the absent Syd remained painfully present in their music and lyrics, most famously with Wish You Were Here and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. John Edginton’s documentary “The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story” tells the full, bizarre, tragic, but also celebratory story of Syd Barrett with contributions from friends, managers, lovers and of course the members of Pink Floyd – Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright.

The Madcap Laughs is the debut solo album by the English singer-songwriter Syd Barrett. It was recorded after Barrett had left Pink Floyd in April 1968. The album had a chequered recording history, with work beginning in mid-1968, but the bulk of the sessions taking place between April and July 1969, for which five different producers were credited − including Barrett, Peter Jenner (1968 sessions), Malcolm Jones (early-to-mid-1969 sessions), and fellow Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Roger Waters (mid-1969 sessions). Among the guest musicians are Willie Wilson from (Gilmour's old band) Jokers Wild and Robert Wyatt of the band Soft Machine…

Psychedelic experimental band from Stockholm, Sweden founded in 2008. They started out as a trio, consisting of Max Månk (bass, organ), Claes Mikael (drums) and Walther William (guitar, organ). First the band was in raw instrumental blues tuned music, but soon they moved over to a psychedelic folk inspired territory. Then singer Mikaela joined and finally they found the sound and style reflected in their music today. The first result is their debut album 'Woodlands', released on TRAIL Records in 2012. Here they offer eleven songs which are reflecting their love for 60s psychedelia, with a preference on Pink Floyd especially, as the band name states. Also reminiscent of the endless Swedish woods the tunes are highly melodic, thus featuring a typical Nordic melancholy…

On his second solo album, Barrett was joined by Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and Pink Floyd members Rick Wright (organ) and Dave Gilmour (guitar). Gilmour and Wright acted as producers as well. Instrumentally, the result is a bit fuller and smoother than the first album, although it's since been revealed that Gilmour and Wright embellished these songs as best they could without much involvement from Barrett, who was often unable or unwilling to perfect his performance…
