On his sixth album for ECM the Italian pianist and his trio reflect on the work of American composer Alec Wilder (1907 1980). I first came into a more direct contact with Alec Wilders music in the early 90s, when I was performing his Sonata for Oboe and Piano and his Sonata for Horn and Piano, Battaglia remembers. I had already known some of his popular songs like While Were Young, Blackberry Winter and Moon and Sand through the intense versions Keith Jarrett has recorded. But after working on Wilders chamber music I wanted to develop a deeper connection with his intriguing musical universe, and Ive discovered an immense hidden treasure.

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.

For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, 1969 (HDCD remastered 2009) (Reprise Records)

Neil Young's second solo album, released only four months after his first, was nearly a total rejection of that polished effort. Though a couple of songs, "Round Round (It Won't Be Long)" and "The Losing End (When You're On)," shared that album's country-folk style, they were altogether livelier and more assured. The difference was that, while Neil Young was a solo effort, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere marked the beginning of Young's recording association with Crazy Horse, the trio of Danny Whitten (guitar), Ralph Molina (drums), and Billy Talbot (bass) that Young had drawn from the struggling local Los Angeles group the Rockets. With them, Young quickly cut a set of loose, guitar-heavy rock songs — "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" — that redefined him as a rock & roll artist. The songs were deliberately underwritten and sketchy as compositions, their lyrics more suggestive than complete, but that made them useful as frames on which to hang the extended improvisations ("River" and "Cowgirl" were each in the nine-to-ten-minute range) Young played with Crazy Horse and to reflect the ominous tone of his singing…

Young Black Teenagers were young, arguably teenagers, but obviously not black. It might seem odd, if not for the fact they had the support of Carlton Ridenour, the man known to the rap world as Chuck D. YBT were signed to S.O.U.L. Records, a label started by Bomb Squad producer Hank Shocklee. The group were meant to be a statement to their love of the music, but everyone saw them as a bunch of pranksters, especially when their first single was "Nobody Knows Kelli", a song about the Christina Applegate character that was on the television show "Married With Children". Those within the group's inner circle knew what they were trying to do, many others were confused as to why a bunch of caucasians (and one Puerto Rican) would call themselves black, especially at the height of Afrocentricity in rap music. It was a social and political statement, and no one quite got it, preferring groups like them to perform sounds about getting drunk and eating punani.
