This film is judged in the wildest and most contradictory terms. Many consider it one of the vilest propaganda films, some think it's quite good at being that, other think it's bad Goebbels among them. Frankly neither evaluation fits. Considering the subject, Stalin's terror machine, it would be hard to portray it in a flattering light, so it doesn't strike me as particularily exaggerated or unfair. The film takes however two digs at Jews which are connected to the Soviets which was true in the beginning of the revolution but not by 1939 after Stalin's purges when the film takes place. Also the finale shows in a very nasty twist the weirdest justification of the infamous bombing of Rotterdam you could imagine. I find however not much evidence of racial stereotyping of which this film is accused and otherwise it's a pretty ordinary and - to be blunt - boring and confusing spy thriller. Neither of the characters comes really alive and the story again and again pointlessly switches places. The final twenty minutes however are pretty well directed and quite exciting when the revenge comes to fruition and the story threads are finished up.So essentially the myth surrounding this film seems to me a gross exaggeration."
