Arvo Pärt: A Portrait, a collection of performances by Canadian violinist Angèle Dubeau and her string ensemble La Pietà, is easily among the finest recordings devoted to Pärt's instrumental music. It includes his best-known works for strings, with the exception of Fratres, in performances of exceptional purity that get at the heart of his uniquely simple, chaste, and directly communicative music.

Estonian composer Arvo Part's timeless music has touched listeners for decades. He is one of the most performed living composers. This new release features eight choral pieces which were written between 1988 and 2012. These works feature some of Part's finest vocal writing, especially in the three-movement Triodion and the seven-movement Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen.

For his new album, Nils Mönkemeyer chose works by William Walton, Max Bruch, and Arvo Pärt. The album starts with Walton’s Viola Concerto and continues with two of Bruch’s compositions: Mönkemeyer recorded Bruch’s Romance for Viola and Orchestra as well as an arrangement of his “Kol Nidrei” (originally for cello and orchestra). Finally, the album contains Pärt’s “Fratres”, arranged for viola, string orchestra and percussion. Mönkemeyer’s musical partners for the recording were the Bamberger Symphoniker conducted by Markus Poschner.

On his new CD with the Viola concerto by William Walton, the Kol Nidrei arranged for viola and the romance for viola and orchestra, Nils Mönkemeyer once again introduces how beautiful, how interesting, how fascinating a viola can be. At Nils Mönkemeyer, the viola has a great body, it sounds almost like a cello, especially in William Walton's concert. Even if you lose the lightness, the flurring in the sound something - from the Kol Nidrei and the romance of Max Bruch speaks the longing. And with the selection of Arvo Pärt's Fratres for viola, strings and drums, Nils Mönkemeyer creates an hour of music, which is at the same time sophisticated, yet still conjuring moments of merriment.

The popular choral group the Sixteen has never sounded better than on this release, and fans of the ensemble can buy with confidence in acquiring a set of classic English Renaissance pieces with a few modern works for spice. For the unconverted it's a bit less convincing, but it has a strong idea. The album title comes from the conventional name of a prayer of none other than St. Patrick, set in modern English by Arvo Pärt in 2007.

Arvo Pärt, who was born in Estonia in 1935, has succeeded in bringing sacred music back to a broader audience, and away from the confines of the church service, more than almost any other contemporary composer. The meditative character of his works, and his return to the simplest and most basic musical forms, convey moments of intense spirituality. Even before his emigration from the Soviet Union to Austria and then to Germany, Pärt had already invented what he termed the tintinnabuli style of composition (from the Latin word for a bell).
