Aretha Franklin has simply been one of the greatest singers of the modern generation, and whether bringing her powerful, passionate voice to bear on gospel standards, songs from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards, pop ditties, or deep Southern soul and R&B, she has always had the presence – much like Ray Charles – to make anything she touches unmistakably hers. Franklin began her career in gospel when she was still a teenager, and her amazing vocal talents, coupled with her fine piano playing, marked her as a once-in-a-lifetime kind of artist, qualities very apparent to legendary talent scout John Hammond, who signed her to Columbia Records.

A good anthology that covers various album cuts, B-sides, and assorted material in a jazz vein that Aretha cut for Columbia. It's great to hear her underrated piano playing given some more space, and Columbia should really reissue her Dinah Washington tribute album, from which they pulled a couple of these songs. Aretha wasn't a jazz vocalist from the standpoint of approach or inspiration, but she really can sing anything and showed it on these cuts, even if they weren't, for the most part, hits.

"Greatest Hits (1980-1994)" is the RIAA Platinum-certified first greatest hits album released by Aretha Franklin since she signed with Arista Records in 1980. As it can be read in the title, it compiles her hits from 1980's "Aretha" all through her last album at the time, 1991's "What You See Is What You Sweat". Songs from her 1989 album "Through the Storm" were not included in the set, nor were either of her duets with Elton John and Whitney Houston. Songs from her second Arista set, 1981's "Love All the Hurt Away" were not included either, meaning neither the title track hit duet with George Benson nor her Grammy Award-winning cover of "Hold On I'm Comin'" were in the set. Other omissions include her hit duet with the Eurythmics' "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" and her 1983 Top 10 R&B hit "Every Girl (Wants My Guy)", produced by Luther Vandross.

Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942) is a Memphis, Tennessee-born but Detroit, Michigan-reared American iconic gospel, soul, and R&B singer. Many have called her "The Queen Of Soul" and "Lady Soul".
She is renowned for her soul and R&B recordings (on many, of which, she accompanies herself on keyboards and piano - a skill she learned at an early age, learning to play by ear, according to lifetime friend Smokey Robinson) but is also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, and gospel…

A long-forgotten mid-1970s film a DREAM GIRLS precursor about a Motownish singing trio–yielded this interesting soundtrack collaboration between soul's reigning royalty, Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield. Unbeknownst to many, the album is the source of the Mayfield-penned 'Something He Can Feel,' later made famous by En Vogue.
