Harnoncourt eschews tradition for tradition’s sake in the symphony. He approaches the score afresh, and the result is a reading both idiomatic and illuminating. Harnoncourt coaxes sparkling detail from the interplay of strings and woodwinds and allows the lower brass to come through cleanly. Trombones punch out the melody at the end of the first movement and the timpani strokes are crisp. The second movement flows gently, with beautiful playing from the woodwinds gliding over a lush, glowing surface of strings. There is no wallowing or point-making in this rendition of the famous largo. The references to Beethoven and Smetana in the fleet scherzo do not call attention to themselves, and the finale is urgent and majestic.

When Leonard Bernstein died in 1990 at the age of 72, music lovers the world over mourned the loss of one of the 20th century's artistic giants. In addition to his role as conductor, composer, educator and performing artist, Bernstein was one of the early pioneers in bringing the arts to television. As such, he became one of the most internationally recognized musical personalities in the world. He was a man who not only needed music in order to live, but who saw in artistic communication the means to touch the mind, the heart and the spirit all at once. His need to generate this communication dictated his life from the day he discovered music to the day he died. Recorded in March 1990, this performance is Leonard Bernstein's last concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, an orchestra he deeply loved.

Unfinished works by great masters possess an appeal that is hard to put into words. It can reach almost mystical dimensions if the creator died before finishing it. Just think of Mozart’s Requiem and Schubert’s «Unfinished Symphony». The same is true for Anton Bruckner’s ninth symphony. He was able to complete three movements. But on 11 October 1896, after working on the Finale in his flat at Belvedere palace in the morning, the 71-year-old composer succumbed to his serious illness. Bruckner reportedly planned to dedicate the symphony to «the Dear Lord», which indicates that he intended his «Ninth» as a farewell piece.

"…There are a lot of "New World" recordings but Jansons is surely competitive with the great ones with Fischer, Kondrasjin, Harnoncourt en Kubelik. This CD is a jewel both in the freshness of the playing and in the clearness of the recording. My favorite!" ~sa-cd.net
