The Center Counter can be aggressive and dangerous. It immediately challenges White from the get-go (1. e4 d5!) and it is making a comeback! Because of Andrew Martin's 2… Qxd5, the Center Counter also doesn't require a mountain of memorization nor knowledge to learn it and use it.

Andrew Martin, The Hippopotamus Rises: The Re-Emergence of a Chess Opening
ISBN: 0713489898 | edition 2006 | PDF | 140 pages | 14 mb

The hippopotamus, as every big game hunter knows, is a deceptively dangerous beast. And so, in the chess world, is the Hippopotamus Defense. To opponents unfamiliar with it, it looks awkward and unaggressive—until it crushes the life out of their favorite openings. Andrew Martin analyzes the basic moves and key variations of the Hippopotamus, showing with illustrative games how it confuses the average player yet is inherently sound enough for Grandmaster competition. In these days of huge databases and long forcing lines, the Hippopotamus stands out, offering everyone the chance to play chess in an original and interesting way.

My guess is that a lot of 1 d4 players don´'t really know what to do against the Dutch. The move 1 … f5 has cropped up relatively infrequently (until now) and only the most well prepared professionals are ready to fight properly against it. I also, through bitter experience, don't think its particularly easy to play the g3 systems for white. Black may well be weakening his kingside but in return he has established a grip on e4 and it's not at all clear how to shake it off.

Narrator: John Lescault

His good friend Mark Twain dubbed him "St. Andrew." British Prime Minister William Gladstone called him an "example" for the wealthy. Such terms seldom apply to multimillionaires. But Andrew Carnegie was no run-of-the-mill steel magnate. At age 13 and full of dreams, he sailed from his native Dunfermline, Scotland, to America. The story of his success begins with a $1.20-a-week job at a bobbin factory. By the end of his life, he had amassed an unprecedented fortune - and given away more than 90 percent of it for the good of mankind.

The biblical story of the princess Judith, who seduces and then beheads the invading Assyrian general Holofernes, has attracted composers from the early days of opera almost down to the present day with its mixture of gore, patriotic self-sacrifice, and latent feminist themes.

The violin was perhaps the most popular instrument of the 17th century. It turns up in nearly every Baroque instrumental genre, including the solo sonata, the concerto, and the immensely popular trio sonata (for two violins, often complimented by harpsichord, organ, or theorbo). Much less common, but equally compelling, are pieces for three violins with some sort of plucked or strummed accompaniment.

The pianist Martin Helmchen has now joined Alpha for several recordings. Acknowledged as one of the leading pianists of his generation, an eminent interpreter of the German repertoire, Helmchen will explore various periods and composers (including Messiaen!), but Beethoven will have a preponderant place in his forthcoming recording projects. Before the complete concertos, planned for 2020, he tackles the Diabelli Variations, ‘a climax in the life of a pianist’.
