Il n'est jamais trop tard pour acquérir la mentalité qui mène au succès. Tout être, à tout âge, a les moyens de réussir ou de surmonter un échec. Il est rare qu'un chef d'entreprise diffuse les secrets de sa dynamique personnelle.

A veteran of Jordi Savall's Hespèrion XX and XXI, gambaist Marianne Muller makes her Zig Zag Territories debut with this disc of music by the great French Baroque composer Marin Marais. The repertoire is daunting: the ingenious and evocative Le Labyrinthe, the 32 virtuoso variations on Les Folies d'Espagne, and the 12-movement Suite in E minor from Marais' Second Book of Pièces de viole. These are works that require not just virtuosity, stamina, intense expressivity, and soulful beauty of tone.

On his new recording Daniel Müller-Schott demonstrates a verve and lively curiosity in his programme, bringing together three composers to form a triangular relationship that is fascinating to experience. The intertwining and superimposition of successive generations is charming in itself: Johann Sebastian Bachs son, born in 1714, was perhaps the greatest composer of his generation; the essential founding father of the Classical era and creator of significant musical genres, born in 1732; and finally, the child prodigy born in 1756.

If you're going to record the fiendishly difficult and vibrant violin and cello concertos of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, magnificently clean, virtuosic, and sensitive performances are absolutely essential for soloists and orchestra alike. Fortunately, that is precisely what is achieved on this recording featuring violinist Arabella Steinbacher, cellist Daniel Muller-Schott, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

With the proliferation of more and more recording labels and still more ensembles getting the opportunity to record their work, it is obviously increasingly difficult to bring anything truly original when performing works from the standard repertoire. Unfortunately, this fact may lead to some questionable performance decisions in striving for originality. Such seems to be the case with the Leopold String Trio and Marc-André Hamelin and their performance of the Brahms piano quartets.

Shortly before its notorious Paris ballet premiere in 1913, this was essentially how The Rite of Spring first saw the light of day: Leif Ove Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin recapture the heady, visceral thrill which must have been in the air when Stravinsky sat down at the piano with Debussy to create this landmark of modernism.
