Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different was first released in the US in 1973, but didn't really take off as a midnight-movie fixture until after the Monty Python's Flying Circus TV series began making the PBS rounds. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam are the Pythonites in attendance, together with semiregulars Carol Cleveland and Connie Booth. The sketches presented include such classics as "The Lumberjack Song", "Hell's Grannies", "The Upperclass Twit of the Year Race", and, of course, "The Dead Parrot". Additionally, Terry Gilliam's animated-cartoon interpolations act as buffers between sketches.

My intro to my post of the first nine issues of Dave Sim's starts with, "And now for something completely different!" and ends with, "Don't say I didn't warn you." This self-published idiosyncratic series, with it’s strange brew of the history of inking and photorealism styles in comics through the twentieth century, with Dave Sim first reproducing the pages in question, then taking those relearned skills to reproduce fashion magazine images--upon which he places a self-knowing satire on the magazines and those who write and read them--continues to confuse occasional readers. Reviewers are either put off or waxing lyrical with ratings of 4 out of 5. It could very well be a high concept comic book pretending to be a collage (of sorts), or vice versa. Still, since I started it, I might as well follow it through.

And now for something completely different! is a Canadian independent comic book written and illustrated by Canadian artist and master graphic novelist Dave Sim, the creator of the 300-issue, 6,000-page epic ("... the longest-running originally English-language comic book series ever by a single creative team."). The premise of the comic book is threefold: a parody of fashion magazines, a history of photorealism in comic books (starting with Alex Raymond's in 1946), and a surreal super-heroine comic (read that the strangest super-heroine comic book of all time). Great art and layout work, though. Posted here purely for purposes of trivia and equal-opportunity exposure. Don't say I didn't warn you.
