Becoming Criminal: Transversal Performance and Cultural Dissidence in Early Modern England

Becoming Criminal: Transversal Performance and Cultural Dissidence in Early Modern England by Bryan Reynolds
English | Feb. 20, 2002 | ISBN: 0801868084 | 235 Pages | PDF | 12 MB

In this book Bryan Reynolds argues that early modern England experienced a sociocultural phenomenon, unprecedented in English history, which has been largely overlooked by historians and critics. Beginning in the 1520s, a distinct "criminal culture" of beggars, vagabonds, confidence tricksters, prostitutes, and gypsies emerged and flourished. This community defined itself through its criminal conduct and dissident thought and was, in turn, officially defined by and against the dominant conceptions of English cultural normality.

Unwind is the book that I recommend more than any other. It's hard to sell it as a "good book" because the subject matter is too dark and twisted to explain. It's not a fun ride, it doesn't have a happy ending. But it is impossible to sear from your brain. UnDivided is a worthy finale. I thought I was prepared for the final chapter. I didn't particularly care for the third book in the series, which I thought telegraphed the end-game too heavily, and didn't advance the plot much.

This book had a very interesting storyline. I enjoyed it immensely. Darren has the ability to freeze time. He doesn't know why or how this is possible but I love how he lives his life doing what he does. One day, he runs into someone who also has this gift. At this time in the story, this exact moment, I knew I was hooked and I needed to know more. Mira was intriguing to me, she can do what he does, but she lives a completely different life than Darren.
