An intimate family portrait of the film director John Boorman by one who should know him best - his daughter Katrine. Now over 80 years old, the director of Hell in the Pacific, Excalibur, Deliverance and The Emerald Forest is one of the last great mavericks. His daughter, who previously had never held a camera, spent four years filming her father who, during the process, found it impossible to resist taking control and offering her a crash course in filmmaking.

John Adams: Road Movies (2004)
Classical | EAC (APE & CUE) | 209 MB

Nominated for the 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Chamber Music Performance", Road Movies offers a portrait of John Adams at different stages of his career. His best-known compositions are musical statements made on a grand scale. The pieces selected for this disc, however, were written for one or two instruments, but by no means are they "small" works―there's plenty of the Adams style and substance. "China Gates" and "Phrygian Gates", both for solo piano, date back to the very beginning of his professional life in 1977. They bear the mark of youthful exuberance and are excellent examples of his compositional language in the early stages of development. The later works have the type of harmonic and melodic movement that Adams is known for, which Adams describes as traveling music, and indeed they are the sonic equivalent of watching landscapes through a car's windshield. Leila Josefowicz handles the violin part of the title track with characteristic aplomb, providing particularly expressive playing in the "Meditative" section. "American Berserk", another latter-day composition on the album, is a frenetic romp that edges perilously close to spinning out of control at several points but pulls itself together in the nick of time.

41: A Portrait of My Father by George W. Bush is a unique biography not only because it is written by a son about his father but it is also about a former president by another former president. It may be pertinent to point out that John Quincy Adams and George W. Bush are the only two U.S. presidents whose fathers also served in the White House. John Quincy Adams was the sixth president while his father John Adams was the second president of United States of America.

In the 1960s, British painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) surprises a burglar and invites him to share his bed. The burglar, a working class man named George Dyer, 30 years Bacon's junior, accepts. Bacon finds Dyer's amorality and innocence attractive, introducing him to his Soho pals. In their sex life, Dyer dominates, Bacon is the masochist. Dyer's bouts with depression, his drinking and pill popping, and his satanic nightmares strain the relationship, as does his pain with Bacon's casual infidelities. Bacon paints, talks with wit, and, as Dyer spins out of control, begins to find him tiresome. Could Bacon care less?

A look at the life and work of American publisher Barney Rosset, who struggled to bring controversial works like "Tropic of Cancer" and "Naked Lunch" to publication. Barney Rosset is the greatest American publisher of the twentieth century and the most influential cultural figure that you haven't heard of. Under Rosset, Grove Press and Evergreen Review fought decisive battles, including many before the state and federal supreme courts, defeated legal censorship, and opened American life to new and dangerous currents of freedom. But Rosset s public fight against hypocrisy and injustice is inextricable from his tumultuous personal life: the same unyeilding, quixotic, restless energy that upended centuries of law brought Rosset perilously close to destruction.
