If there is one pianist alive today who can be considered a member of the pantheon of golden-age pianists, it is, in my opinion, Ivan Moravec. A musician capable of conjuring up magical sounds from the instrument, and as comfortable and stylish in Beethoven and Mozart as in Chopin and Debussy, Moravec is here featured in a live recital from 1983.

Sometimes tragic circumstances lead to great music-making, as fine performers and better people come together for the common cause of celebrating the all too brief life of an emerging composer whose spirit was cut short. Brendan Edward Romaneck was such a figure, a budding talent on the saxophone, fresh out of the University of South Florida's jazz program where he studied with Bunky Green and pianist Keith Javors.

Kyle Eastwood's fourth recording takes the bassist into a populist mode, playing music much more on the contemporary side of the jazz dichotomy. Far from a mainstream or swinging date, the acoustic and electric bassist seems as if he's determined to compose music for the screenplay in his head from his time spent in Paris, France, where this was recorded. The fine drummer Manu Katche, keyboardist Eric Legnini, and trumpeter Till Brцnner are focused into making this music less standardized and more rhythm & blues oriented. It's produced by longtime collaborator Michael Stevens with help from the son of Miles Davis, Erin Davis, and sports the quadruple attachment to Eastwood's Rendezvous production company and Chick Corea's manager, Ron Moss.

Described by some as "a female Bon Jovi," Vixen is an all-female band that has specialized in very slick, commercial, and glossy hard rock and pop-metal. Vixen was never a favorite among rock critics, whose barbs didn't prevent the band from selling millions of albums in the late '80s…

The lives of a set of identical twins, one an Ivy League philosophy professor, the other a small-time and brilliant marijuana grower, intertwine when the professor is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown for a doomed scheme against a local drug lord.

Bassist/composer Matt Ulery has spent the last half of this decade entertaining Chicago with his involvement in chamber-jazz outfit Loom, jazz and classical-guitar quartet Eastern Blok, and other exceptional endeavors. Now, following the recent release of Loom’s Music Box Ballerina album, Ulery is releasing a CD of beautiful, composed scores that are intended for film. The album, Themes and Scenes, contains seven pieces that are arranged for strings, brass, and percussion and accompanied by Wurlitzer electronic piano.

Three years after Gerry Mulligan initially sat in with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, the baritone saxophonist arrived at a point where he could perform alongside Brubeck's alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, for this much anticipated session. When legal issues, wranglings with producer Norman Granz, and the question of which record label would subsidize and release this album were resolved, the two saxophonists went ahead to produce a delightful program of standards and originals where their more playful sides could fully blossom. The wonderful interaction between Mulligan's burly but agile horn and the ultimate smooth - but in this case animated and energized - sax of Desmond is more than just magical, and makes for a fluid, jaunty, delicious combination sure to please even the most jaded or stone-eared music listener…

The aptly titled and much-sampled Feels So Good represents the creative apex of Grover Washington, Jr.'s sublime electric funk sound. Its shimmering, soulful grooves refute the argument that smooth jazz is little more than mere ambience, combining expert playing and intricate songwriting to create music that is both compelling and comforting. Arranger Bob James is in top form here, creating the spacious, rich milieus that are his trademark, but regardless of the name above the title, bassist Louis Johnson is the real star of the show. His supple rhythms percolate like coffee, adding oomph to the bottom of highlights "Hydra" and "Knucklehead" while Washington's cream-and-sugar soprano sax solos soar over the top.

"West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" is the third studio album by British indie rock band Kasabian, which was released in June 2009. It is also the first album by the band to not feature Christopher Karloff, the band's lead guitarist and songwriter, following his departure during the writing stages of Kasabian's second album, Empire. The rhythm guitarist Sergio Pizzorno took over as the main force behind the band's song writing and also forced as lead guitarist to replace Karloff's duties. The album name is not related to the Sydney suburb of West Ryde in New South Wales, Australia. The album was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize. In October 2009, it was voted the best album of the year by Q Magazine.
