"A New Direction" is the second release from pianist/composer/vocalist Amy Janelle, following her 2010 debut, "Shining True." Since that first recording, Amy moved from the wet and chilly Pacific Northwest to warm and dry Sedona, AZ - a new direction, indeed, and a testament to the philosophy of “living your dream.” "Shining True" includes three vocal pieces, but this time there is just one, the closing track.

Einar Englund (1916–1999) was not only one of Finlands major symphonists; he was also one of his countrys most important pianists. He was destined for a virtuoso career until he damaged a finger as a soldier in the Battle of Bengtskjär in the Finnish Continuation War in 1941 but when he later discovered the bullet holes in his beret, he realised he had had a lucky escape!

Following on from Volume 11 which has a superb Eroica Variations, Ronald Brautigam’s excellent journey through Beethoven’s complete works for solo piano continues in volume 12 with further variations. This time it’s a group from earlier in his career. The Dressler Variations were Beethoven’s first published work, and are pleasant enough though pretty light-weight stuff, as are the almost aphoristic Sechs Variationen über ein Schweizer Lied.

All the works on this CD date from Ernst Tochs inter-war years, when he completely stripped his music of romanticism by disregarding late Romantic harmonic conventions and restrictions. 'What has always fascinated and impressed me from the beginning particularly in the works after 1918 is their reduction to the most important essentials. Every noteconveys the impression of being absolutely necessary, and not one is superfluous or replaceable. Ernst Tochs music displays conviction, and his story moves me in such a special way that I feel a great need to make his music accessible again to a broader public and to make my own contribution to the re-introduction of the most forgotten composer of the 20th century, as Toch often referred to himself in the final years of his life' Anna Magdalena Kokits.

With SOLO PIANO, Glass presents himself "unplugged" - no electronic keyboards or synthesizers, and no overdubs, either - just solo piano. Here, Glass' connection to the established "classical" tradition is most evident. Though his pieces are "minimal" (subtly altered repeated patterns or melodic motifs), yet they have an unsentimental beauty and heartfelt grace that one would hear in J.S. Bach's English Suites, as well as the piano music of Chopin and Erik Satie.

The thirty-five CDs that make up the present boxed set are designed to acquaint listeners with one of the most important pianists of the 20th century or, if they are already familiar with his work, to allow them to rediscover it anew. Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) was the final representative of the great tradition of German pianists that also included Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) and Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969). Of the three, Kempff had by far the longest career - he gave his last public concert in 1982.

Shostakovich’s two Piano Concertos span a period of almost thirty years. The youthful First Piano Concerto is a masterful example of eclecticism, its inscrutable humour and seriousness allied to virtuoso writing enhanced by the rôle for solo trumpet. Written as a birthday present for his son Maxim, the Second Piano Concerto is light-spirited with a hauntingly beautiful slow movement. With the permission of the composer’s family, Boris Giltburg has arranged the exceptionally dark, deeply personal and powerful String Quartet No. 8, thereby establishing a major Shostakovich solo piano composition.
