"A New Direction" is the second release from pianist/composer/vocalist Amy Janelle, following her 2010 debut, "Shining True." Since that first recording, Amy moved from the wet and chilly Pacific Northwest to warm and dry Sedona, AZ - a new direction, indeed, and a testament to the philosophy of “living your dream.” "Shining True" includes three vocal pieces, but this time there is just one, the closing track.

His Brahms series being now complete in six volumes and widely praised, Barry Douglas continues his exploration of Schubert’s piano music. The romantic, personal outlook developed in the course of the Brahms survey is fully expressed in this new Schubert volume: deeply characteristic works written in the nostalgic, yet prolific last years of the composer’s short life.

A great transcriptionist before the Eternal, Liszt "borrowed" from all his contemporaries, including himself. But as a borrower, it has seriously increased the borrowing of a very large number of interests of all kinds, especially virtuoso. Here, under the fingers of the Hungarian pianist Gábor Farkas (a disciple of Kocsis), winner of the Liszt Prize of Weimar in 2009 and regularly invited to the most prestigious halls of the world - Carnegie Hall, Fenice of Venice, Konzerthaus of Berlin etc. - an array of "arrangements," or rather of complete rewritings, realized from scenes of operas by Gounod, Verdi and Wagner; As well as Lieder de Schumann (monsieur and madame) and Chopin (who wrote some songs according to Polish themes, little marvels). And to top it all, the version that Liszt himself established for solo piano from his own Totentanz initially designed for piano and orchestra.

The penultimate volume in Hyperion’s four-part survey of the complete solo piano music of Ernő Dohnányi focuses on music from the period when the composer’s pre-eminent position was being assured. The titles of the largest works here, Ruralia hungarica and the Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, mask in their nationalistic ostentation the skill of a true master of piano composition. Martin Roscoe inhabits the world of Dohnányi’s music like no other—appraisals of the earlier volumes attest to this—and this new recording is a joy.

This is Volume 4 in Barry Douglas’s monumental project to record the complete works for solo piano by Johannes Brahms. Each volume has been released to critical acclaim, the first one, in 2012, being seen by BBC Music as ‘a triumph of Brahmsian thought, with playing that gets right to the heart of the composer’. Once again, the album is presented as a stand-alone recital, prominently featuring the C major Sonata, which was Brahms’s first published work. The influence on Brahms of his early romantic predecessors Beethoven and Schubert is obvious here, not only in the virtuoso demands on the performer but also in the opening, which recalls both Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ Sonata, Op. 106 and Schubert’s ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy.
