Over the years, Anton Newcombe and the Brian Jonestown Massacre have gotten more promotional mileage out of their self-sabotage than they have ink spilled on their shambolic musical blend of the Stones, Velvets, and Summer of Love-derived transcendence. Megalomania, drug abuse, internal strife, aborted tours, and frustrated fans – it's a checklist for band destruction. And yet the Brian Jonestown Massacre endure. They got a boost outside of their sizable niche in 2003 with the release of a documentary that traced both their contentious relationship with the Dandy Warhols and Newcombe's mercurial antics/genius.
AMAZE ME's 3rd album is their second-best (after the debut). Melodic but rough-edged guitars…tight, catchy hooks…over-the-top choruses…slick, layered backing vocals…this CD is a melodic hard rocker's dream…
In the midst of his tenure with the Oscar Peterson Trio, Herb Ellis had the chance to turn the tables on his boss and employ him as a sideman, though the keyboard virtuoso strangely reigns in his chops and pretty much stays in the background. This pair of sessions was first issued on a Norgran LP and finally reissued as a Verve CD in early 2006. The first four tracks add Jimmy Giuffre (alternating between baritone sax, tenor sax, and clarinet) and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, along with fellow Peterson sideman Ray Brown and drummer Alvin Stoller. Ellis' originals include the easygoing "Sweetheart Blues" and the cooking bop vehicle "Pogo," where both the leader and Edison eclipse Giuffre's efforts on sax. ..
TNNE (The No Name Experience) is a new project of former No Name members Alex Rukavina and Patrick Kiefer. When Kiefer left No Name in 2011 he and Rukavina decided to record a song. This turned into a full album and they choose their new band name out of respect for the former No Name musicians.
Carolyn's first-ever live album is a tasteful 12-song set from shows at Antone's in Austin, Kessler Theater in Dallas and Last Concert Café in Houston. Her trio plus guests Guy Forsyth and Shelley King play new original songs, a new co-write with Ruthie Foster and covers of Doug Sahm, Lean Russel and Los Labos.
